This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this work was produced as part of my academic requirements for the award of an MA in International Educational Management Degree of the University of Leeds, it is an important source of reference for researchers in the field of educational planning and management, practitioners of educational planning and management, politicians and policy makers with specific regard to educational management improvement. It brings out new insights and areas of comparison and learning between rural-based and urban-based schools in the operationalisation of Universal Primary Education in Uganda. Lessons can also be drawn from this comparative case study in Uganda for the management of other public educational institutions both in the developing and developed worlds. This critical study also raises vital new issues in the management of Universal Primary Education (UPE) which can be further investigated to inform practice, policy and subsequent research.

This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although some progress has been made in the implementation of universal primary education in Uganda, there are still several challenges including the quality of education, financing the program and parental involvement. This book gives a brief history of education in Uganda and highlights the crucial challenges that must be addressed if the universal primary education (UPE) program is to bear the desired fruits. The interviews and observations conducted by the author of this book in some primary schools show the major role of the head teachers who are the major links between the school and the other shareholders. The book offers some suggestions that will help the UPE program and other future education policies in Uganda and other countries to succeed.

Book An Analysis of Quality Universal Primary Education in Uganda

Download or read book An Analysis of Quality Universal Primary Education in Uganda written by Lillian Viko and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the chronology of events that led to the decline in quality primary education in Uganda. It highlights challenges of Universal Primary Education (UPE) implementation in Uganda as a response to achieving the Education For All (EFA) call. It reveals the challenges that the UPE programme has faced which have led to poor quality delivery of primary education. Developing countries like Uganda have quickly adopted the human capital theoretical views that relate human resource development to economic growth alongside, adopting human rights perspectives to education. Based on this background, UPE has been embraced as a means to achieving economic growth. In Uganda UPE was started in 1997; the country having suffered the effects of political instability that greatly crippled education for over a decade. This book is intended for scholars, education planners and development planners mostly in Africa.

Book Rethinking Education for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Rethinking Education for Sustainable Development written by Radhika Iyengar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how education can be used as a tool to promote sustainability practices as the world faces huge challenges related to climate change and public health. The chapters consider all types of literacy approaches that fall under the umbrella of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). These approaches include scientific literacy, ecological literacy, health literacy, education on climate change and climate resilience, environmental education and others linking education, global health, and the environment more broadly. “Education” is used in the widest sense to incorporate non-formal, informal and formal/school settings. This volume will help to bring these interconnected areas together and interrogate their research methods, assumptions, field-based application and their policy potential. Taking a critical approach to ESD, the book suggests new pedagogies, tools, and technologies to strengthen the way we educate about sustainability issues and go beyond the current thinking about ESD. The book includes a foreword by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, USA.

Book Rethinking School Health

Download or read book Rethinking School Health written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the goals of Education for All (EFA) to be achieved, children must be healthy enough not only to attend school but also to learn while there. Because school health and nutrition programs specifically benefit poor, sick, and hungry children, they can make a key contribution to achieving EFA's goals. However, children can benefit only if the programs reach them. Rethinking School Health: A Key Component of Education for All describes how schools have been used as a platform for delivering familiar, safe, and simple health and nutrition interventions to hard-to-reach children in low-income countries. The book's foreword was written jointly by Elizabeth King of the World Bank, Susan Durston of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and Qian Tang of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), indicating the interagency support for this approach. The book will be of particular interest to those working in the fields of education, health and nutrition, and early childhood development. --Book Jacket.

Book Achieving Universal Primary Education in Uganda

Download or read book Achieving Universal Primary Education in Uganda written by Carla Bertoncino and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda's primary enrollment rates have risen remarkably since 1996, when the Government eliminated fees in a bold attempt to achieve universal primary education. But the massive expansion in numbers has affected the quality of education; and it will be a major challenge to cope with the rising demand for post-primary education. Key lessons learned include: Successful education reform in developing countries like Uganda require high levels of political and education management commitment that is sustained over a long period. The big bang approach can be a very powerful policy instrument for getting all the children into school and Uganda had managed to do this very well. Timely, flexible donor support is a critical factor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as a starting point that hunger results from social exclusion and distributional inequities and that lasting, sustainable and just solutions are to be found in changing the structures that underlie our food systems, this book examines how law shapes global food systems and their ongoing transformations. Using detailed case studies, historical mapping and legal analysis, the contributors show how various actors (farmers, civil society groups, government officials, international bodies) use or could use different legal tools (legislative, jurisprudential, norm-setting) on various scales (local, national, regional, global) to achieve structural changes in food systems. Section 1, Institutionalizing New Approaches, explores the possibility of institutionalizing social change through two alternative visions for change – the right to food and food sovereignty. Individual chapters discuss Vía Campesina’s struggle to implement food sovereignty principles into international trade law, and present case studies on adopting food sovereignty legislation in Nicaragua and right to food legislation in Uganda. The chapters in Section 2, Regulating for Change, explore the extent to which the regulation of actors can or cannot change incentives and produce transformative results in food systems. They look at the role of the state in regulating its own actions as well as the actions of third parties and analyze various means of regulating land grabs. The final section, Governing for Better Food Systems, discusses the fragmentation of international law and the impacts of this fragmentation on the realization of human rights. These chapters trace the underpinnings of the current global food system, explore the challenges of competing regimes of intellectual property, farmers rights and human rights, and suggest new modes of governance for global and local food systems. The stakes for building better food systems are high. Our current path leaves many behind, destroying the environment and entrenching inequality and systemic poverty. While it is commonly understood that legal structures are at the heart of food systems, the legal academy has yet to make a significant contribution to recent discussions on improving food systems - this book aims to fill that gap.

This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents quality of Universal Primary Education (UPE) Policy in Northern Uganda. It covers the districts of Adjumani, Amolatar, Amuru, Apac, Dokolo, Gulu, Gulu Municipality, Kitgum, Lira, Lira Municipality, Oyam and Pader, between November and December 2007. Its written based on Education Policy Planning Framework of Haddad and Demsky 1995 and Education For All (EFA) by Little 2008. It draws on findings of policy implementation of UPE by stakeholders. Key partners in implementation of the UPE policy included Ministry of Education and Sports, Political Leaders, District Leaders and school management committees. It further looks at policy impact assessment of UPE in order to identify areas which have been a major constraint on the achievements in education quality such inadequate classrooms, furniture and teaching learning aids. Finally, looking at policy implications and recommendations, the report therefore, proposes urgent need to mobilise additional resources and increase physical facilities like text books, classrooms, reform of teacher training programs to desist from content-driven and teacher-centred tutoring at the colleges and participation of stakeholders

Book Implementing Educational Policies in Uganda

Download or read book Implementing Educational Policies in Uganda written by Cooper F. Odaet and published by Washington, D.C. : World Bank. This book was released on 1990 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of independence from Britain in 1962, education in Uganda was more advanced than in neighboring countries, although still unsatisfactory. This paper reviews the recommendations of commissions, educational reviews, and five-year plans for the development of educational policies since independence. There have been two main long-term government objectives -- primary school expansion toward the goal of universal primary education, and the provision of sufficient manpower of the quality needed to meet the skill requirements of the economy. The implementation of these goals was severely hampered by the events of the 1970s, which were a decade of "total national calamity" that affected all sectors of the economy, including the education system. The Recovery Program of 1982/84 was adopted to reconstruct and rehabilitate the educational infrastructure. The report reviews the present-day status of education in Uganda with regard to internal and external efficiency, equity, and non-quantitative criteria such as national policy and Ugandanization. It finds four remaining major problem areas : a) continued illiteracy; b) high dropout rates at almost all levels; c) unqualified teachers along with a shortage of qualified ones; and d) a widening gap between educational preparation and actual employment opportunities.

Book Universal Primary Education in Africa

Download or read book Universal Primary Education in Africa written by Daniel N. Sifuna and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many countries all over the world are struggling to achieve for all. As part of such effort, they have strategized to provide universal primary education which normally refers to the enrollment of all school age children in primary schools, namely achieving one hundred percent of the net enrollment. While such efforts have been realized in many developing countries, it is a major challenge in most developing countries, especially in Africa following the attainment of independence. This book focuses on the influence of donor agencies in setting for the development of education in Africa leading to the preliminary interventions by different African English countries through the provision of free primary education. It is noted that most of the countries which introduced fee remission through free primary education experienced massive enrollments as many children from disadvantaged groups took advantage of the policy intervention to send their children to school. However, the push for it came to be identified with increasing deterioration in the quality of primary education right from the provision of physical facilities, teaching and learning materials, deployment of teachers, performance and transition from primary to secondary education. The quality of infrastructure and teaching and learning materials were in a deplorable state, especially in the rural areas, where such enrollments were well above the official recommended number of pupils per classroom. It proceeds to provide an interesting and easy to read accounts of the development of universal primary education in selected countries analyzing successes and challenges. Among the key challenges identified in the implementation of the UPE policy include; the lack of adequate planning, financing, inadequate infrastructure, and the HIV/AIDS scourge. On the basis of the above challenges, it is important that policy measures are put in place to improve the quality of primary education in many countries"--
