Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The retention of qualified Information Technology (IT) employees is at an all time low within higher education institutions. IT personnel are essential for higher education institutions to effectively integrate technology into their educational programs. These IT employees contribute to their institution's teaching/learning mission, while simultaneously supporting complex and highly visible administrative operations. Yet, all previous research regarding IT employee retention issues had only been conducted within corporate settings. To examine factors related to IT employees' retention within public higher education, an internet-based study was sent to IT employees in all four-year public universities throughout Michigan. The survey included questions within five overall areas (a) reasons to stay in their current position, (b) reasons to leave their current position, (c) information about former positions, (d) improvement recommendations, and (e) demographic information. Responses from 183 IT employees revealed such individuals stay in their current position because of flexibility and a combination of variables that include respect, supervisor's skills, department communication, training, and the potential to increase their salary. Key reasons IT employees consider leaving their current employment include increased stress, and a combination of variables involving a less relaxed work environment, concerns over health care, sick leave, vacation leave benefits, and limited job security. Key reasons IT employees cited for leaving their former positions were to acquire an advanced degree, job promotion, improved health care, vacation and sick leave benefits, positive co-worker relations, and a more relaxed or flexible work environment. Consistent with research findings within corporate settings, competitive benefits packages are an essential component for the retention of IT employees within higher education. Higher education IT leadership may be able to reduce employee turnover, and increase employee satisfaction and productivity, while reducing retraining expenses by incorporating strategies deemed important via this research.

Training should be made compulsory for every employee as it provides necessary skills. Best performance and rewards should match performance in order to keep employees at the institution.

Book excerpt: SUMMARY A study of the attrition rate in higher education is relevant since it may assist in curbing the loss of first year students from tertiary studies. It is, however, unclear whether academic or non-academic factors, or both, on an equal basis, cause the high attrition rate among first year students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The researcher selected and applied an empirical research design. The empirical research design was conducted with first year students as a population study at CPUT (Cape Town Campus). Both quantitative and qualitative methods of research were employed to obtain the major factors causing first year student dropout. All the faculties of the Cape Town campus were included in the study and a sample of 15 departments was conducted. The majority of the respondents (67%) were between the ages 26-30. Females constituted the largest respondents (57%) and male (43%). First year students constituted the largest percentage of the respondents with (93%) and second year students (7%). The researcher believes academic and non-academic communications require strengthening and development.

The purpose of this study was to establish the determinants of academic staff retention in Zimbabwean universities with particular reference to two universities in Matabeleland region. Specifically, the objectives of the study were to establish whether demographic factors (age, sex and marital status), remuneration, career advancement opportunities, training and development, educational qualifications and amount of workload have an influence on academic staff retention. The study was quantitative and it employed the survey design. The total population of the academic staff in the two universities covered by the study was 491. Stratified random sampling was used to select a sample of 119 from the two universities. Data was analysed using Eviews version 10 and SPSS Version 21 software. The study employed the logit model to estimate the results. The study revealed that marital status, educational level, training and development, workload, remuneration and career advancement opportunities significantly affect academic staff retention in Zimbabwean universities. Age and sex do not have a significant effect on academic staff retention. The study recommended the need for Zimbabwean universities to provide staff exchange programmes so that members of staff can share latest practices with staff members from other universities. It also recommended academic institutions to negotiate with banks to offer housing and vehicle loans to academic staff at reasonable interest rates. Another recommendation was that universities should conduct exit interviews with quitting members of staff so as to identify the major reasons for quitting. In addition, universities should provide continuous professional development programmes to their staff, so that they can obtain relevant training and appropriate skills.
