Book Retail Therapy

Download or read book Retail Therapy written by Mark Pilkington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost weekly, the news is full of stories about disappearing retail chains. From House of Fraser and BHS to Toys'R'Us and Sears, recognised names are vanishing overnight – as such large organizations disappear, so the malls, shopping centres, high streets and main streets become emptier and less appealing to visit. The retail sector is hugely important in terms of job numbers: in the US, it employs around 30 million people (directly and indirectly); in the UK, around 10 million. As such, anything that jeopardises the retail sector will have a deep and lasting impact on millions of lives, as well as on public policy. While many blame the 'Amazon effect', this is an oversimplification. Deeper forces are at work that are changing people's relationships with brands, the balance of power between producers and consumers, and the whole nature of the supply chain that has existed since the industrial revolution. Retail Therapy offers a comprehensive analysis of these forces and their impact on the world of retailing. More importantly, it presents a cogent analysis of the longer term trends that are shaping retailing, and outlines a clear road map for sustainable success in the future.

Book House of Commons Business Innovation and Skills Committee The Retail Sector Volume I HC 168 I

Download or read book House of Commons Business Innovation and Skills Committee The Retail Sector Volume I HC 168 I written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business, Innovation and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee calls for a wholesale review that goes beyond the administration of business rates to examine whether retail taxes should be based on sales rather than the rateable value of a property; whether retail needs its own system of business taxation; and how frequently revaluations should take place. In the interim, the Committee calls for a six months business rates amnesty for businesses occupying empty properties. This would go further than the 50% reduction announced in the Autumn Statement and would encourage new businesses to the High Street. The Committee also recommends that in the interim the Government review whether business rates are more appropriately linked to CPI or RPI and calls for annual increases to be linked to a 12 month average of either RPI or CPI, with a cap at 2%. This would replace the current link to a monthly snapshot of RPI. The Government should provide information on how and how much of the money allocated to the Portas Pilots is being spent. This follows concerns that much of the money allocated to the pilots has not been spent. The Government is also urged to outline the results of its latest STEM skills analysis and outline the action it will take to tackle any skills shortages. The retail sector also needs to encourage more staff to be trained at Apprenticeship Level 3 and above, and consider developing language skills to enhance the international consumers' experience

Book Organized Retail in India

Download or read book Organized Retail in India written by Deepali Malhotra & V. K. Malhotra and published by K.K. Publications.. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized retail in India is a decade or so old phenomenon. During the last ten or twelve years, it has progressed well. At the same time, it is facing many problems, challenges, difficulties some are general and others are India specific. The objective of this book is to analyze these problems and discuss future prospects of this sector in India. In addition to problems and prospects, some other important related aspects of organized retailing in India such as politics and organized retail, use of latest technology in organized retail, the impact of organized retail on the Indian economy and unorganized sector, foreign direct investment in organized retail, job and career opportunities in organized retail in India are also included in this work. Broadly, there are six categories of chapters. In the first political and technical category come two chapters that deal with some important and hitherto untouched aspects of organized retail in India such as politics and technology. In the second category are seven chapters on the growth of modern and organized retail in India, its changing faces, its impact on the Indian economy. The third category consists of two chapters that deal with the impact of organized retail on unorganized retail in India. The fourth category also has two chapters on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the organized retail sector in India. Career and job opportunities are the theme of the next two chapters that come under the fifth category. In the sixth and last category are five chapters that explain problems and challenges faced by the organized retail and future prospects of this sector in India. Retailing or retail management is now found a place in the syllabi of MBA programs. Many universities and colleges have initiated new courses in retailing at different levels. Some have started separate and specialized MBA in Retail Management. Pass outs of these programs and courses are providing manpower and human resources to upcoming organized retail outlets like malls, hypermarkets, stores, etc. In other words, the organized retail sector is providing new job and career opportunities to young people. Retailing is emerging a useful and contemporary discipline in Commerce and Management faculties. But one finds a very limited number of books on the organized retail sector in India. The present compendium endeavors to fill this gap. It is hoped that this book will be very useful to the corporate sector involved in the emerging organized retail industry; executives, managers and employees of malls and stores; faculty of educational institutions involved in teaching and students of this new discipline.
