Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of Meteorological Observations in the Five Years 1916-1920, Made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, Vol. 52 In consequence of the largely increased volume of astronomical work carried on at this Observatory in recent years, especially in connexion with the investigation of stellar parallax and proper motion now in hand, it was found impossible with the limited staff to continue systematically the measurement of the photographic records of barometric pressure and air temperature, as was done for the six years, 1900 - 1905, the results of which appeared in Volume XLIX. The photographic results, therefore, do not appear in this volume, but the records continue for the present to be taken as hitherto and are available for reference at any time. Rambaut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of Meteorological Observations Made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, in the Five Years 1906-1910, Vol. 50 This volume exhibits the results of the meteorological observations made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, during the five years 1906 to 1910 inclusive. In its main features it is arranged on the same lines as Volume XLVIII of the same series, which contains the meteorological results for the eight years 1892-1899, but differs from the latter in the fact that the readings of the underground platinum-resistance thermometers, which were continued daily up to the end of October, 1910, have not been included, as they are still under consideration, and it is intended to publish them later with a full discussion of the results. In con sequence of the largely increased volume of astronomical work carried on at this Observatory in recent years, especially that in connexion with the investigation of stellar parallax and proper motion now in hand, it has been found impossible with the limited staff to continue systematically the measurements of the photographic records of barometric pressure and air temperature as was done for the six years to which the last volume related. The photographic results, therefore, do not appear in this volume, but the records continue for the present to be taken as hitherto, and are available for reference at any time. The routine of observation has been very much the same as that followed in previous years, and only two changes were introduced which need here be noticed. On January 1, 1908, the readings of the rain-gauge situated at a height of 22 feet above the surface of the ground were discontinued, and after December 31, 1908, no further readings were taken of the rain gauge at a height of 1 1 2 feet, nor of the thermometers placed on the Tower at a height of 105 feet above the surface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of Meteorological Observations in the Five Years 1911-1915, Vol. 51: Also of Underground Temperatures in the Twelve Years 1898-1910, Made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford This volume contains the results of the meteorological observations made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, during the five years, 191 1 to 1915 inclusive. The arrangement of the volume differs in some important respects from that of its recent predecessors in the same series. In the year 191 1, having by means of a special grant for the purpose overtaken the arrears into which the printing of the observations had fallen, it was decided to keep them up to date by printing the principal results annually, and for the convenience of meteorologists who might desire to make immediate use of them a limited number of the separate annual parts, in paper covers, were issued early in the year following that to which each part related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of Meteorological Observations Made at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, in the Five Years 1921-1925, Vol. 54 IN its main features this volume is arranged on the same lines as for merly. It is formed Of five annual parts, the first four of which were printed soon after the completion of the years to which they refer, and a limited number were distributed for the convenience Of meteorologists who might wish to make immediate use of the data contained in them. Certain changes in the routine of Observation have been introduced during this quinquennial period, the most important Of which are the redue tion of the number of eye-readings from three to one per diem, and the dismantling and return to the Meteorological Office Of the photographic barog'raph and thermographs, which had been in continuous use here since 1881, when they were Obtained on loan from the Meteorological Committee. These two changes took effect from the beginning of the year 192 5, and they were introduced because it was considered that the full system Of Observations, that had been made here for a number Of years, had served their purpose in providing us with an accurate knowledge. Of the climate Of Oxford, and that adequate record of the weather in the future could be Obtained from a simpler system of eye-observations and from recording instruments more economical in time and money, than are the photographic recorders. The tables containing the results for 192 5 are therefore necessarily different in form from those Of the other four years, and a separate explanation Of the tables is given for this year. In its main features it is arranged on the same lines as the previous volume which contains the meteorological results for the eight years I 8 92 I 899, with, however, three important differences, viz.: (i) that the readings of the five underground platinum thermometers, which were commenced in October, 1 898, and continued daily throughout the six years dealt with here, have been omitted, as it is intended to publish them later in a separate form with a full discussion of the results; (ii) that the tabulated daily results and monthly means derived from the photographic and as] f -recording instruments have been included; and (iii) that the results of the hourly readings of the barograph thermograph, and hygrograph have also been incorporated in the volume, with a discussion of the mean diurnal in equalities in the readings of the three instruments for the period under consideration, and a comparison of these inequalities with similar quantities deduced for the period 1880-1887.
