Book Results of a Microbial Weathering Study of Composted Explosives Contaminated Soil Obtained from the Umatilla Army Depot Actvity Hermiston Oregon Second Phase Testing September 1998 September 1999

Download or read book Results of a Microbial Weathering Study of Composted Explosives Contaminated Soil Obtained from the Umatilla Army Depot Actvity Hermiston Oregon Second Phase Testing September 1998 September 1999 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the third and final year (September 1998 through September 1999) of a Microbial Weathering Study conducted to determine if composted explosives-contaminated soil would leach explosives or explosive by-products. The study was conducted using compost produced during the remediation of an explosives-contaminated site at the U.S. Army's Umatilla Army Depot Activity at Hermiston, Oregon. This compost was shipped to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Environmental Research Facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the study was conducted. The results of the third year of the study confirmed the results of the first two years of the study and these were that no TNT or TNT breakdown products were leached from the compost but as much as 31.5 and 26.4 ppb of HMX and RDX, respectively, were leached. These results suggest that HMX and RDX were not fully mineralized in the composting process. However, the concentrations leached were well below the state of Oregon's action limit of 30 ppm. Analysis of compost revealed that TNB was the only explosive breakdown product remaining in the compost after being weathered three years. Concentrations of TNB in the compost were less than 0.5 ppm. The results of the first two years (September1996 - September1998) of the Microbial Weathering Study are provided in USAEC Report No. SFlM-AEC-ET-CR-98042.

Book Optimization of Composting for Explosives Contaminated Soil

Download or read book Optimization of Composting for Explosives Contaminated Soil written by R. T. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A composting optimization field study for explosives contaminated soil was conducted at the Umatilla Army Depot Activity (UMDA) in order to maximize the quantity of soil treated per unit time. Different amendments and soil loading levels were investigated in mechanically agitated and static pile reactors. In addition to the removal of TNT, RDX, and HMX, compost moisture, temperature, and pH were monitored. Toxicity reduction was monitored, using the same samples analyzed by WESTON, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. All three explosives were significantly degraded. Degradation dropped as soil loading increased from 30 to 40 volume percent in each reactor type. More effective degradation was achieved in the mechanically agitated reactor than in the static pile reactors. Amendment composition affected degradation rate and extent, as well as operating parameters such as pH.

Download or read book Urban Land written by Dieter D. Genske and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban land is an environmental key topic considering the increasing urbani sation of our world. The amounting pressure on resources especially in the urban environment demand awareness across technical and political sectors and solid concepts for workable solutions. This book will address those people, who are key in coping with the challenges of sustainable urban land use management: Professionals in the growing field of urban land recycling and graduate students from different disciplines including urban planning, environmental sciences and geotechnics. Processes that lead to urban land degradation include the extraction of resources, their transformation into goods, the production of waste and conflicts in the allocation of land. Industrial soil pollution, soil sealing and urban sprawl pose serious challenges to resource management in urban environments. The possible implications are not necessarily restricted to the urban area but do have feedback into the countryside. The reduction of arable land in urban peripheries often causes enhanced pressure on back-country natural ecosystems such as forests, grass- and wetlands. Urban land recycling especially in the developing world is to be seen in the context of poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Ifwe don't get a proper sustainable use of urban land, as well as of water and other natural resources that relate to them, sustainable development will not be reached.

Book Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons

Download or read book Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-11-24 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines seven disposal technologies being considered by the U.S. government as alternative methods to the process of incineration for destroying mortars, rockets, land mines, and other weapons that contain chemical warfare agents, such as mustard gas. These weapons are considered especially dangerous because they contain both chemical warfare agent and explosive materials in an assembled package that must be disassembled for destruction. The study identifies the strengths and weaknesses and advantages and disadvantages of each technology and assesses their potential for full-scale implementation.

Book Biodegradation and Bioremediation

Download or read book Biodegradation and Bioremediation written by Ajay Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, experts from universities, government labs and industry share their findings on the microbiological, biochemical and molecular aspects of biodegradation and bioremediation. The text covers numerous topics, including: bioavailability, biodegradation of various pollutants, microbial community dynamics, properties and engineering of important biocatalysts, and methods for monitoring bioremediation processes. Microbial processes are environmentally compatible and can be integrated with non-biological processes to detoxify, degrade and immobilize environmental contaminants.

Book The Science of Composting

Download or read book The Science of Composting written by Eliot Epstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE The main objective of composting is to transform organic materials into a stable usable product. Often organic materials which may have limited beneficial use in their raw state or have regulatory disposal constraints can be transformed by composting into marketable products. The limits on beneficial reuse may be regulations or they may be due to the potential for materials to be putrescible or pathogenic. Composting can be a solution for each of these. The implementation of composting on a large scale (in contrast to home or backyard composting) involves materials handling. Technological implementation of composting must be consistent with the biological demand of the system. If the biological system is violated, conditions will not be optimized for composting, and problems such as odor generation, insufficient aeration or moisture, or a combination of these conditions may result. Past problems and closure of facilities have been largely due to violations of the biological systems. Product quality with respect to particle size, inclusions, moisture content and other physical aspects are a function of engineering design. A well designed system must have the biological and engineering principles in harmony at all times.
