Book Restructuring the World Economy

Download or read book Restructuring the World Economy written by Joyce Kolko and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 1988 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical account of the current crisis of global capitalism. Kolko examines what the global capitalist system means today--for the United States, Japan, and Western Europe, for the less developed nations, and for the centrally planned economies of Eastern Europe, Russia, and China. The author's analysis moves from changes in banking and the service sector to the new technology industries; the dilemmas of world debt, efforts to restructure world trade, and the nature of monetary relations. Kolko describes the various strategies to restructure the global economy and maintains that reform on a national scale cannot begin to cope with the crisis. She shows how and why the diverse efforts to restructure the global order reflect the character of the current crisis. ISBN 0-394-55920-7: $24.95.

Book The Global Restructuring of Agro Food Systems

Download or read book The Global Restructuring of Agro Food Systems written by Philip D. McMichael and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the world, food systems and agricultural systems are changing at a phenomenal rate. Widespread restructuring has not been confined to the production and distribution of food, though; many regions and even nations are undergoing social, political, and economic transformation as well. Bringing together twelve essays by scholars from a number of disciplines, I this timely book documents the interdependence of food systems, nation states, and the world economy. Stressing the political foundations of global agro-food systems, it sheds light on such complex questions as whether today's changes in food and agrarian systems anticipate a new world order, or are merely efforts to preserve an old order in crisis.

Book The International Steel Industry

Download or read book The International Steel Industry written by Ray Hudson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. The international steel industry suffered a major decline after the onset of world recession in 1973, perhaps suffering more plant closures and job losses than any other sector. This book analyses the decline, surveying the various factors which have contributed to it, such as changing production strategies, changes in demand and world trade and changing regional production trends. It goes on to examine the impact of decline on steel-making communities, considering the various local, national and international initiatives to assist the affected areas and the way these initiatives have been devised and implemented. The authors conclude that none of these policies has satisfactorily resolved the crisis in the old steel producing areas and that a major crisis in these areas continues. Finally they discuss the social and political options open to these localities for the future.

Book Interrogating the New Economy

Download or read book Interrogating the New Economy written by Norene Pupo and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrogating the New Economy is a collection of original essays investigating the New Economy and how changes ascribed to it have impacted labour relations, access to work, and, more generally, the social and cultural experiences of work in Canada. Based on years of participatory research, sector-specific studies, and quantitative and qualitative data collection, the work accounts for the ways in which the contemporary workplace has changed but also the extent to which older forms of work organization still remain. The collection begins with an overview of the key social and economic transformations that define the New Economy. It then illustrates these transformations through examples, including essays on wine tourism, the regeneration of mining communities, the place of student workers, and changes in the public service workplace. It also addresses unions and their responses to the restructuring of work, as well as other forms of resistance.

Book Globalisation Industrial Restructuring and Labour Standards

Download or read book Globalisation Industrial Restructuring and Labour Standards written by Debdas Banerjee and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-07-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the current conditions of work in the Indian factory sector, and provides a critical analysis of the wage, profit and productivity behaviour in India’s organised manufacturing sector over the last two decades. Examining the specificities of the conditions of industrial workers, it addresses three major questions:/-//-/- What has happened to the relative shares of profits and wages;/-/- How do we explain the levels and changes and;/-/- Are better labour standards antithetical to the project of industrial restructuring?/-//-/The author also examines the problem of industrial restructuring in India within the broader context of power and inequality in the workplace. He argues that even though the existing laws mandate decent labour conditions, India has been unable to implement them because of the minimalist position taken by successive governments./-//-/Providing new and fascinating insights into industrial growth, labour standards and development in the framework of globalisation, this book will interest students and scholars of economics, economic history, political science and sociology, as well as students of management and labour relations.

Book Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America

Download or read book Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America written by Fernando Fajnzylber and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent economic history of Latin America no country has yet found the means to combine effectively economic growth with equity. Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America compares the development path of Latin America with that of the East Asian newly industrialized countries (NICs), the United States, and Europe in the 1970s and 1980s to show the national policies and international cooperation necessary to set Latin American countries on the road to healthy economies. Fernando Fajnzylber argues that technological and industrial progress is the driving force of a positive relationship among dynamism, competitiveness, austerity, and equity. Latin America's failure to master this technological progress underlies its economic difficulties. To overcome the inheritance of past mistakes, the author maintains, Latin America must undergo not only macroeconomic stabilization and a reduction of the debt burden, but also a complete transformation of the production structure. The role of the state and the institutional setup need to be modified and new social and sectoral policies devised. Fajnzylber sees this radical restructuring as an unavoidable step if Latin America is ever to achieve a workable balance between growth and equity.

Book Industrial Restructuring

Download or read book Industrial Restructuring written by Alan Roe and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rationalizing and restructuring of industries is an increasingly important phenomenon in all countries of the OECD and in many developing countries as well. This paper examines that phenomenon from a number of different angles. It defines a taxonomy of restructuring in terms of the level at which restructuring takes place (company, sector or economy-wide) and the motivation behind it (defensive or positive). It attempts to identify the market failures that may justify government intervention with the process. The paper then uses this analytical framework to examine why the pressures on governments to intervene have so manifestly intensified in recent times, and to identify types of industries most likely to be the object of such intervention. Finally, the paper provides a selective and comparative overview of the industrial restructuring experiences of six major OECD countries. The juxtaposition of the theoretical arguments for intervention to correct market failures with the descriptive analysis of OECD country experiences, provides both an analytical framework and certain policy implications of relevance in a developing country context.

Book The Logic of International Restructuring

Download or read book The Logic of International Restructuring written by Winfried Ruigrok and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is within the corporate world an evolving international restructuring race, between industrial complexes, that is set to intensify over the coming years. An industrial complex consists of suppliers, distributors, governments, financiers and trade unions. It is the reorganisation of the relationship between the core firm and the above components that is set to change before very long. In this book, Winfied Ruigrok and Rob van Tulder address many current debates on topics such as "Post-Fordism","globalisation" and "lean production".They also identify a number pf rival internationalisation strategies that have been adopted by different companies. Moreover, they present an abundance of new,as well as historical data,on the world's one hundred largest core companies. This data shows that none of the largest core firms is truly "global" or "borderless",and that virtually all of them in their history have benefited decisively from Governmental trade or industrial policies. The authors offer a highly interdisciplinary effort to link three previously isolated debates on industrial restructuring, globalisation and international trade policies. The Logic of International Restructuring is aimed at a wide academic,post-graduate and professional audience working in the areas of business, economics, organisational studies and international relations.
