Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology brings together a stimulating and entertaining collection of works from the confident and creative period of 1660-1700. The literature of this time is by turns refined, poignant, and brash. Alongside major works such as Dryden's Absalom and Achitophel and Mac Flecknoe, printed in their entirety, is a substantial group of lyrics by Rochester, while Milton's Paradise Lost provides a running commentary on the Restoration scene. Scurrilous satires and pamphlets, diaries, theatrical prologues, translations and striking work by women poets and autobiographers illustrate the period in politics, religion, philosophy and in attitudes to town and country, love and friendship.

Book The Restoration Transposed

Download or read book The Restoration Transposed written by Gillian Wright and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revisionist study of Restoration literature and culture demonstrates how important the decades between 1660 and 1700 were in transforming, enlarging and diversifying English-language poetry. Wright challenges the longstanding narrative of Restoration poetry as a male, urban, London-centric form obsessed with the contemporary, arguing persuasively that this schema omits crucial literary works and relationships. Framed around three detailed case studies of neglected aspects of Restoration poetry, the book explores the depth of Spenser's influence, the importance of poetry flourishing in Ireland, the significance of natural landscapes and the vital role of women: both as readers, and writers. This book presents a diverse literary Restoration steeped in historical self-awareness and anxieties, engaged with the world outside England's capital, and open to new voices. Its impressive scope encompasses myriad little-known writers, while extensive historical research underpins its fresh perspectives on poets such as Dryden, Rochester, Cowley, Milton, Marvell and Behn.

Book The Time Traveler s Guide to Restoration Britain

Download or read book The Time Traveler s Guide to Restoration Britain written by Ian Mortimer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine you could see the smiles of the people mentioned in Samuel Pepys’s diary, hear the shouts of market traders, and touch their wares. How would you find your way around? Where would you stay? What would you wear? Where might you be suspected of witchcraft? Where would you be welcome? This is an up-close-and-personal look at Britain between the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660 and the end of the century. The last witch is sentenced to death just two years before Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica, the bedrock of modern science, is published. Religion still has a severe grip on society and yet some—including the king—flout every moral convention they can find. There are great fires in London and Edinburgh; the plague disappears; a global trading empire develops.Over these four dynamic decades, the last vestiges of medievalism are swept away and replaced by a tremendous cultural flowering. Why are half the people you meet under the age of twenty-one? What is considered rude? And why is dueling so popular? Mortimer delves into the nuances of daily life to paint a vibrant and detailed picture of society at the dawn of the modern world as only he can.

Book Marriage A La Mode

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Dryden
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2014-06-13
  • ISBN : 1408144263
  • Pages : 147 pages

Download or read book Marriage A La Mode written by John Dryden and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dryden's audiences in 1671, both aristocratic and middle-class, would have been quick to respond to the themes of disputed royal succession, Francophilia and loyalty among subjects in his most successful tragicomedy. In the tragic plot, written in verse, young Leonidas has to struggle to assert his place as the rightful heir to the throne of Sicily and to the hand of the usurper's daughter. In the comic plot, written in prose, two fashionable couples (much more at home in London drawing-rooms than at the Sicilian court) play at switching partners in the 'modern' style. The introduction of this edition argues that Dryden's own ambivalence about King Charles and his entourage, on whom he came to rely more on more for patronage, manifests itself in both plots; most of all perhaps in the excessively Francophile Melantha, whose affectation cannot quite hide her endearing joie-de-vivre.

Book Coyness and Crime in Restoration Comedy

Download or read book Coyness and Crime in Restoration Comedy written by Peggy Thompson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coyness and Crime examines the extraordinary focus on feminine coyness in forty English comedies by ten diverse playwrights of the late seventeenth-century. In contexts ranging from reaffirmations of church and king to emerging interests in liberty and novelty, these plays consistently reveal women caught in an ironic and nearly intractable convergence of objectification and culpability that allows them little innocent sexual agency; this is both the source and the legacy of coyness in Restoration comedy.

Book The Secret History in Literature 1660 1820

Download or read book The Secret History in Literature 1660 1820 written by Rebecca Bullard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret history, with its claim to expose secrets of state and the sexual intrigues of monarchs and ministers, alarmed and thrilled readers across Europe and America from the mid-seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Scholars have recognised for some time the important position that the genre occupies within the literary and political culture of the Enlightenment. Of interest to students of British, French and American literature, as well as political and intellectual history, this new volume of essays demonstrates for the first time the extent of secret history's interaction with different literary traditions, including epic poetry, Restoration drama, periodicals, and slave narratives. It reveals secret history's impact on authors, readers, and the book trade in England, France, and America throughout the long eighteenth century. In doing so, it offers a case study for approaching questions of genre at moments when political and cultural shifts put strain on traditional generic categories.

Book The Literature of the Restoration

Download or read book The Literature of the Restoration written by Percy John Dobell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Restoration: Being a Collection of the Poetrical and Dramatic Literature Produced Between the Years 1660 and 1700, With Particular Reference to the Writings of John Dryden I Do not think any work exists from which a general view of the activities of the poets and playwrights of the last forty years of the seventeenth century can bo obtained. No exhaustive attempt has yet been made at writing the history of English Literature during this period, and bibliographical particulars regarding the various writers and their works are of the scantiest. This collection is by no means complete, but it provides, I believe, a fuller and better list of the names of the writers and the titles of their productions than can be obtained elsewhere, even diligent students of our poetical literature, glancing over these pages, will probably observe many works hitherto unknown to them. At no other period of our history were courtiers, politicians and poets so much given to conducting their controversies in verse, and it may be that the personal element conduced to the preservation of a great deal of the fugitive poetry of the time, though much must have utterly perished. Dryden's right to rank among the greatest of our poets is undeniable, yet a definitive edition of his works has still to be published, for Scott's cannot be ranked as a critical edition, and Professor Saintsbury's is little more than a re-issue of Scott. Neither, editor made any attempt at collating the early editions of the plays or providing the means for a textual study of the poet. I doubt whether any library, public or private, contains so many of the early editions of the ploys of Dryden and his contemporaries as I have here amassed, and if the present collection could be preserved intact it would form a valuable nucleus on which to found a comprehensive study of the literature of the time.
