Book excerpt: Donald Leroy Evans was an American serial killer who allegedly killed over 15 people between 1970 and 1991 but confessed to over 60 murderers-mostly women-at rest stops and parks throughout 20 U.S. states. He was arrested after leading police to the body of a homeless ten-year-old girl, Beatrice Routh, who he had kidnapped in Mississippi, taken to Louisiana where he raped and strangled her to death, and then dumped her body in a shallow grave back in Mississippi. Evans pled guilty to the offense and then to an additional 60 murders (some reports state that the number was 72); however, authorities could not find any evidence corroborating his claims and, later, Evans admitted it was a hoax.

Download or read book Killer on the Road written by Ginger Strand and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the 1950s, Americans eagerly built the planet’s largest public work: the 42,795-mile National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Before the concrete was dry on the new roads, however, a specter began haunting them—the highway killer. He went by many names: the “Hitcher,” the “Freeway Killer,” the “Killer on the Road,” the “I-5 Strangler,” and the “Beltway Sniper.” Some of these criminals were imagined, but many were real. The nation’s murder rate shot up as its expressways were built. America became more violent and more mobile at the same time. Killer on the Road tells the entwined stories of America’s highways and its highway killers. There’s the hot-rodding juvenile delinquent who led the National Guard on a multistate manhunt; the wannabe highway patrolman who murdered hitchhiking coeds; the record promoter who preyed on “ghetto kids” in a city reshaped by freeways; the nondescript married man who stalked the interstates seeking women with car trouble; and the trucker who delivered death with his cargo. Thudding away behind these grisly crime sprees is the story of the interstates—how they were sold, how they were built, how they reshaped the nation, and how we came to equate them with violence. Through the stories of highway killers, we see how the “killer on the road,” like the train robber, the gangster, and the mobster, entered the cast of American outlaws, and how the freeway—conceived as a road to utopia—came to be feared as a highway to hell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is known for long desolate highways and interstates. Designed to make traveling easier and faster, thousands of vehicles go down these roads on a daily basis. During the 1960s and 1970s, seeing hitchhikers was nothing unusual. But not every one of them got to their desired destination. The number of missing hitchhikers made people change their minds about this type of travel. It became very risky in the second half of the 1970s, and parents started warning their children about the dangers that loom on the interstates. After all, it is impossible to know the person who picks you up or their intentions. Robert Ben Rhoades became a truck driver in the 1980s. He was a disturbed individual who saw his new employment as a perfect hunting ground. After all, the victims would come to him, asking for a ride. He was known nationwide as The Truck Stop Killer. While the total number of his victims is still unconfirmed, Rhoades was one of the most dangerous serial killers because he was driven by his sexual fantasies and the need to dominate.

Some think he was the Zodiac killer; others say he was D.B. Cooper, or even Jim Morrison. • Suicide or murder?—Joseph Kupchik hid gambling problems from friends and family until he was found at the bottom of a nine-story parking deck in downtown Cleveland—with multiple stab wounds. • Heist—In 1969, Lakewood bank employee Ted Conrad nabbed $215,000 from the vault one day after his twentieth birthday. The FBI still shows up at his high school reunions. • Controversy—Jeffrey Krotine was thrice tried for the grisly 2003 murder of his wife and ultimately acquitted, to the frustration of Cuyahoga County prosecutors, detectives, and even jurors. These stories venture into dark alleys and seedy strip clubs, as well as comfortable suburbs and cozy small towns, where some of the region’s most horrendous crimes have occurred. Renner’s unblinking eye for detail and unwavering search for the truth make this book a gripping read.
