Book excerpt: The study was conducted to know the effect of ammonia treatment on the chemical composition in vitro digestability and fibre degradability in rumen the effect of feeding ammonia treated straw on the VFA production rates and microbial protein synthesis and lastly the effect of feeding ammoniated straw on growth body composition and nutrient utilisation. The results have revealed that optimal level of NH3 treatment could be taken as 3% (w/w) as the increment in the degradability of fibre was not in general significantly more at the higher levels of treatment exept for one or two parameters. The utilization of various fibrous constituents decidely increased significantly due to ammonoation of wheat straw which contributed much to the increased rates of bacterial production in the rumen by way of increased avaolabality of VFA particularly propionate. The growth rates (g/day) of the animals fed on aminiated straw rations were significantly higher. THe digestibilics of DM, CF, NDF, ADF and cellulose were significantly higher in animals fed on NH3 treated straw. Protein relention eficiency was also higher.

TCORN has produced a series of numbered reports including No. 5 in 1990 on Nutrient Requirements on Ruminant Animals: Energyand in 1992, No. 9 Nutrient Requirements of Ruminant Animals: Protein. The former recommended, with only minor modifications, the adoption of the AFRC’s 1980 Technical Review’s full recommendations on energy requirements of ruminants, while the latter recommended the adoption of a protein system based on Metabolisable Protein as the unit. Opportunity has been taken to include material from TCORN Report No. 8, 1991 on the Voluntary Intake of Silage by Cattle and from an unpublished TCORN Report on the Nutrition of Goats. The current volume presents these recommendations in a practical form designed for use by advisors, farmers, lecturers, research workers and students concerned with the nutrition of ruminant animals. The manual includes 45 tables of requirements (incorporating agreed safety margins) and 29 example diets.
