Book Response of Containerized Black Spruce and Jack Pine Seedlings to Fertilization Rate and Growing Medium

Download or read book Response of Containerized Black Spruce and Jack Pine Seedlings to Fertilization Rate and Growing Medium written by Stephen John Colombo and published by Maple : Ontario Tree Improvement and Forest Biomass Institute. This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the presence of handbooks for the production of containerized tree seedlings, the determination of appropriate rates of fertilization remains an inexact science, since the rate and timing of fertilization can be affected by factors such as local variation in water chemistry, growing media, and the environment in each greenhouse. This report presents the results of semi-operational trial of fertilizer rates and growing media to assess for black spruce and jack pine container seedlings; the range of fertilizer concentrations and seedling nutrient contents resulting in best seedling growth; and the effect of fertilization on bud development and fall freezing damage. Black spruce and jack pine seedlings were grown at the Swastika Tree Nursery according to operational greenhouse practices, at 0, 1/3, 1, 3 or 9X the operational fertilization rates for each species in three growing media.

Book Effect of Fertilization on Free Amino Acid Concentrations in Black Spruce and Jack Pine Containerized Seedlings

Download or read book Effect of Fertilization on Free Amino Acid Concentrations in Black Spruce and Jack Pine Containerized Seedlings written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenhouse-grown black spruce and jack pine container seedlings were fertilized weekly with a 20-8-20 fertilizer at four concentrations during thefall. Seedlings were sampled when 23 weeks old towards the end of thegreenhouse cultural period to determine the effect of fertilization on thefree amino acid concentration. References are included.

Download or read book Conifer Cold Hardiness written by F.J. Bigras and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conifer Cold Hardiness provides an up-to-date synthesis by leading scientists in the study of the major physiological and environmental factors regulating cold hardiness of conifer tree species. This state-of-the-art reference comprehensively explains current understanding of conifer cold hardiness ranging from the gene to the globe and from the highly applied to the very basic. Topics addressed encompass cold hardiness from the perspectives of ecology, ecophysiology, acclimation and deacclimation, seedling production and reforestation, the impacts of biotic and abiotic factors, and methods for studying and analyzing cold hardiness. The content is relevant to geneticists, ecologists, stress physiologists, environmental and global change scientists, pathologists, advanced nursery and silvicultural practitioners, and graduate students involved in plant biology, plant physiology, horticulture and forestry with an interest in cold hardiness.

Book Planting Depth and Its Influence on Survival and Growth

Download or read book Planting Depth and Its Influence on Survival and Growth written by Terrence David Schwan and published by [Timmins] : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northeast Science and Technology. This book was released on 1994 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current practice in Ontario for planting tree seedlings is to place the root collar level with the soil surface. There is evidence that deeper planting can improve performance of certain tree species, and this report reviews 11 relevant studies of deep planting of jack pine, black spruce, white spruce, and other North American conifers. Explanations, as described in the literature, of environmental & biological consequence are provided and current planting practices are described. Finally, the current findings as they applied to the above three species are summarized.
