Download or read book Biology of the Crayfish Orconectes Causeyi and Its Use for Control of Aquatic Weeds in Trout Lakes written by Jack L. Dean and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sumerged aquatic plants limit the suitability for trout management of many shallow lakes in the Southwest. Control of these weeds has been achieved by the introduced crayfish Orconectes causeyi. The life history, ecology, and weed-control activities of the crayfish are discussed. Abundant crayfish populations occur over a wide range of elevations in permanent well-oxygenated ponds, lakes and streams where predaceous warm-water fishes are scarce. Weed control is proportional to the crayfish population and proximity of a rocky substrate which is preferred habitat. This crayfish is a tertiary burrower establishing relatively shallow burrows for hibernation and egg hatching periods. It has not damaged dams or irrigation ditches and has been compatible with local agriculture.

Download or read book Marking Fish with Dyes and Other Chemicals written by Dean E. Arnold and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on marking fish with chemicals is reviewed, with critical commentary and suggestions for desirable areas of research. A variety of substances have been used to mark aquatic animals by methods such as deep injection, subcutaneous injection, tattooing, immersuion, daubing, and feeding. Over 100 dyes and other chemicals that have been used for marking aquatic animals are listed and the results of published or unpublished experiments using each one are summarized. A bibliography of over 150 titles is given.

Download or read book Surface Temperature Gradients Observed in Marine Areas Receiving Warm Water Discharges written by James L. Squire (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most steam-electric generating plants located near the ocean use sea water as coolant for their steam condenser system. During observations of coastal surface water temperatures off southern California in December 1962 with an airborne infrared radiometer, a noticeable rise in surface temperature was encountered when near warm-water outlets of generating plants, and heated discharge appeared to diffuse over the surface layer.
Download or read book Brook Trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park written by Robert E. Lennon and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brook trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park are relatively scarce and are found only in remote, headwater streams. They are also small and short-lived. Males outnumber females, especially among sexually mature fish. The fecundity is lower than in fish of comparable size in Wisconsin and Canadian waters. Under present conditions, any increase in exploitation of the brook trout in the Park or damaging alteration of the habitat might have serious consequences for the remanent populations.
Download or read book Tissue Changes in Puffers Exposed to Methoxychlor and Methyl Parathion written by Ronald Eisler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult northern puffers were exposed for periods up to 45 days to either 30 parts per billion (ppb) of the organochloride insecticide methoxychlor, 20, 200 ppb of the organophosphorous insecticide methyl parathion, or to a combination of 15 ppb of methoxychlor and 10, 100 ppb of methyl parathion. These concentrations will produce approximately 5 percent mortality in 96 hours under the conditions of the experiment. Profiles were constructed on the effects of each insecticide on blood and tissue components. The visual patterns provided by these profiles suggest a means of identifying unfavorable environmental conditions before the appearence of obvious morphological or physiological changes.
Download or read book Seasonal Abundance of Aquatic Invertebrates and Their Utilization by Hatchery reared Rainbow Trout written by Harry D. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2-year study of the composition of bottom fauna, its seasonal and annual variations, and its utilization by hatchery-reared rainbow trout was made in experimental stream channels of Convict Creek, Mono County, California. Three orders of aquatic invertebrates, Trichoptera, Coleoptera, and Ephemeroptera, comprised 70 percent of the total bottom fauna. Terrestrial insects were an important food source between June and November but were absent from the diet between December and February. Forage ratios and frequency of occurrence of the primary food organisms is given. Post-hatchery survival of rainbow trout in small high altltude streams appears to be more dependent upon the physical condition of the trout at time of stocking than on a highly favorable physical environment.
Download or read book Effects of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate on Rainbow Trout written by Thomas J. Hassler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxicity of detergent levels to rainbow trout was determined by probit analysis. Effects on gill tissues and blood were noted and measured. Destruction of gill tissues were severe. The respiratory surface was greatly reduced by lysis and clumping of lamellae. Edema in the epithelial cells of the lamellae and thrombi in the capillaries was evident.
Download or read book Interspecific Hybridization of Esocids written by Keen Buss and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extension of the range of most of the esocid species has posed a problem of interspecific hybridization which could be harmful to indigenous pike species. In this paper literature is reviewd and the success of reciprocal crosses is recorded, including drawings and photographs showing the development of progeny. Fertility of some F1 hybrids was also investigated since this tow would reflect on the biological relationship of the species. It appears that even though many species can be artificially hybridized, isolating mechanisms may prevent or retard hybridization under natural conditions.
Download or read book Bivalvia Through Reptilia written by T Pandian and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Energetics, Volume 2: Bivalvia through Reptilia is part of a two-volume treatise focusing on the integrated picture of the energy transformation process at the organismic level. Since it is almost impossible to restrict meaningful discussions to only one level of organization, some reference is made to population energetics as well as to the suborganismic level. The bioenergetics of both vertebrate and invertebrate groups are discussed. Specifically, the bioenergetics of bivalves, gastropods, bryozoans, pogonophorans, echinoderms, lower chordates, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles are covered. Understanding the efficient and fast transformation of biological energy has become an important issue in world affairs; studies on energetics and growth of thermoconformers can therefore be expected to expand greatly in the future. This book aims to provide many keys to a broader understanding of biology as well as open untrodden avenues to biologists with the quest for newer energy sources and efficient methods of energy utilization.
