Book Therapeutics of the Respiratory System

Download or read book Therapeutics of the Respiratory System written by M. W. Van Denburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics of the Respiratory System: Cough and Coryza, Acute and Chronic; Repertory With Index, Materia Medica With Index The primary objects of this book are to save time and to render the work of the physician more efficient. It saves time by bringing together all the drugs applicable to a given case; it renders the work of the therapeutist more efficient by enabling him to select with greater precision the drug he will use. The foundation of the Materia Medica herein set forth is Hering's Guiding Symptoms, the entire ten volumes of which have been carefully consulted from cover to cover, _ and the most prominent, striking and peculiar symptoms noted, as well as those that most strongly and clearly indicate the drug. The following paragraphs in Hering's Guiding Symptoms have been carefully reviewed. No. 1, Mind; No. 7, Nose; No. 12, Mouth; No. 13, Palate and Throat; No. 25, Larynx and Bronchi; No. 26, Respiration; No. 27, Cough; No. 28, Inner Chest and Lungs; No. 29, Heart, Pulse, and Circulation. By consulting these sections one will see how much labor was necessary to condense and choose. This may not always have been done with the best judgment; but if anyone will try his hand on one full drug, he will have a better basis for judging of the work as a whole. Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Respiratory Physiology

Download or read book Respiratory Physiology written by Henry Prange and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting volume offers a unique approach to respiratory physiology examining the subject based upon fundamental biological, chemical, and physical principles. At each step, the book asks "Does it make sense?". This allows readers to understand not only how gas exchange works, but why scientifically and logically, gas exchange must work as it does. This approach leads to important practical benefits, including a rational understanding of the bases of both physiological acclimation and respiratory therapeutics; insight into what to expect when organisms respond to environmental on pathological challenges; and improved ability to synthesize and explore relationships between what may otherwise seem to be unrelated functions. The insight into respiratory physiology provided by this important text applies to a broad range of disciplines. Health professionals will find their ability to care for patients enhanced by their improved understanding of the functioning of gas exchange in the respiratory system. In addition, the book's thorough coverage provides direction for zoologists and physiologists interested in the development and function of animal respiratory systems.

Book Physiology of Respiration

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael P. Hlastala
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-03-08
  • ISBN : 0199938016
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Physiology of Respiration written by Michael P. Hlastala and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, lucid textbook provides a basis for understanding the function of the respiratory system and a framework for the treatment of many respiratory diseases. It was developed as a working text with problem-solving exercises for the student's use in reviewing each chapter. The writing style flows easily from one topic to another. Mathematical relationships are presented in a simple way and are clearly explained. The illustrations are carefully designed to convey ideas in an easy-to-understand format. The book's scope is comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of respiratory physiology, including pulmonary anatomy and microstructure, mechanics, gas exchange, acid-base balance and control mechanisms. Unlike many texts, this one strikes a good balance between the principles of pulmonary gas exchange (ventilation, perfusion, gas exchange efficiency) and the neural control of respiration (central and chemical mechanisms and reflexes). It emphasizes integrative aspects of respiration such as the system's response to altitude, hyperbaric environments, exercise, sleep, and the in utero and early postnatal period. The second edition has been reorganized to make the book more approachable by students, and it has been updated throughout, including many new ideas about the distribution of lung blood blow and respiratory rhythm generation.

Book Advances in Pulmonary Physiology and Drug Delivery

Download or read book Advances in Pulmonary Physiology and Drug Delivery written by Laurence Booth and published by Murphy & Moore Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulmonary drug delivery refers to all the techniques used to deliver drugs and aerosols to the respiratory epithelium and epithelial cells directly through inhalation. It is used as a targeted therapy for the treatment of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and lung cancer. Drug delivery through the pulmonary route offers the distinct advantages of high bioavailability and no first-pass effect, which makes it an important means of delivering therapeutics directly to lung lesions. The benefits of pulmonary delivery include increased efficiency, a faster onset of delivery, decreased side effects, self-administration of non-invasive delivery, and localized action. The inherent properties of lungs such as their low enzymatic environment and high surface area make pulmonary delivery even more effective. This book provides significant information to help develop a good understanding of pulmonary physiology and drug delivery in respiratory diseases. Its extensive content will provide the readers with a thorough understanding of the subject.
