Book Guide to Wireless Mesh Networks

Download or read book Guide to Wireless Mesh Networks written by Sudip Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). The attractiveness of WMNs, in general, is attributed to their characteristics such as the ability to dynamically self-organize and self-con?gure, coupled with the ability to maintain mesh connectivity leading, in effect, to low set-up/installation costs, simpler maintenance tasks, and service coverage with high reliability and fault-tolerance. WMNs also support their integration with existing wireless networks such as cellular networks, WLANs, wireless-?delity (Wi-Fi), and worldwide interoperability of microwave access (WiMAX). WMNs have found u- ful applications in a broad range of domains such as broadband home networking, commercial/business networking, and community networking – particularly attr- tive in offering broadband wireless access with low initial installation and set-up costs. Even though WMNs have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the wellknownchallenges areattributedtoissuesrelatingtoscalability(signi?cantdrop in throughput with the increase in the number of nodes), multicasting, offering qu- ity of service guarantees, energy ef?ciency, and security. This handbook attempts to provide a comprehensive guide on fundamental key topics coupled with new ideas and results in the areas of WMNs. The book has been prepared keeping in mind that it needs to prove itself to be a valuable resource dealing with both the important core and the specialized issues in WMNs.

Book Fundamentals of Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks

Download or read book Fundamentals of Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks written by Slawomir Stanczak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-29 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide tools for a better understanding of the fundamental tradeo?s and interdependencies in wireless networks, with the goal of designing resource allocation strategies that exploit these int- dependencies to achieve signi?cant performance gains. Two facts prompted us to write it: First, future wireless applications will require a fundamental understanding of the design principles and control mechanisms in wireless networks. Second, the complexity of the network problems simply precludes the use of engineering common sense alone to identify good solutions, and so mathematics becomes the key avenue to cope with central technical problems in the design of wireless networks. In this book, two ?elds of mathematics play a central role: Perron-Frobenius theory for non-negative matrices and optimization theory. This book is a revised and expanded version of the research monograph “Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks” that was published as Lecture Notes in Computer Sciences (LNCS 4000) in 2006. Although the general structure has remained unchanged to a large extent, the book contains - merous additional results and more detailed discussion. For instance, there is a more extensive treatment of general nonnegative matrices and interf- ence functions that are described by an axiomatic model. Additional material on max-min fairness, proportional fairness, utility-based power control with QoS (quality of service) support and stochastic power control has been added.

Book Advances in Multi Channel Resource Allocation

Download or read book Advances in Multi Channel Resource Allocation written by Bo Ji and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen an unprecedented growth in the demand for wireless services. These services are fueled by applications that often require not only high data rates, but also very low latency to function as desired. However, as wireless networks grow and support increasingly large numbers of users, these control algorithms must also incur only low complexity in order to be implemented in practice. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop wireless control algorithms that can achieve both high throughput and low delay, but with low-complexity operations. While these three performance metrics, i.e., throughput, delay, and complexity, are widely acknowledged as being among the most important for modern wireless networks, existing approaches often have had to sacrifice a subset of them in order to optimize the others, leading to wireless resource allocation algorithms that either suffer poor performance or are difficult to implement. In contrast, the recent results presented in this book demonstrate that, by cleverly taking advantage of multiple physical or virtual channels, one can develop new low-complexity algorithms that attain both provably high throughput and provably low delay. The book covers both the intra-cell and network-wide settings. In each case, after the pitfalls of existing approaches are examined, new systematic methodologies are provided to develop algorithms that perform provably well in all three dimensions.

Book Distributed Resource Management for Wireless Mesh Networks

Download or read book Distributed Resource Management for Wireless Mesh Networks written by Xiaobo Yu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless mesh networking is expected to play an important role in the future Inter- net. It can facilitate network coverage at less expense, making it a fitting candidate for multi-hop communications in distributed wireless environments. However, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) still suffer from many problems such as channel contention, interference low efficiency of bandwidth utilization, etc. Therefore, guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia applications while ensuring high bandwidth efficiency is a challenging task in WMNs. In this context, this thesis aims at solving these problems from a resource management at Medium Access Control (MAC) layer point of view. The thesis first surveys the existing protocol designs for Resource Reservation (RR) in IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks. It advises the necessity of MAC layer protocol design for guaranteeing the QoS for Real-Time Sessions (RTSNs) while optimizing bandwidth efficiency. Following the outcomes of the investigation, the thesis proposes an analytical framework to evaluate the guaranteed QoS performance of distributed hybrid MAC RR schemes in distributed single-hop wireless networks. After that, the thesis devises a comprehensive hybrid MAC RR scheme that consists of a distributed hybrid MAC scheduling mechanism and a distributed Admission Control (AC) algorithm. The hybrid MAC scheduling mechanism can provide contention-free channel access for RTSNs and reserve dedicated and periodic resources for them to ensure their QoS guaranteeing. In addition, the mechanism can implement concurrent transmission in the Contention-Free Period (CFP) in order to enhance the bandwidth usage for the reserved resources. The distributed Admission Control Algorithm (ACA), on the other harid, can cooperate with the distributed hybrid MAC scheduling mechanism in order to make optimized RR for RTSNs with specific QoS requirements. Furthermore, the proposed distributed ACA can help MAC scheduler to implement resource sharing. It can permit several RTSNs to share an identical Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) in the CFP provided that each of the resource sharer can obtain guaranteed QoS. This can directly improve the efficiency of bandwidth utilization.
