Book Resonant Elastic and Inelastic X ray Scattering Studies of Orders and Excitations in Cuprate High temperature Superconductors

Download or read book Resonant Elastic and Inelastic X ray Scattering Studies of Orders and Excitations in Cuprate High temperature Superconductors written by Min Gu Kang (S.M.) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 30 years of extensive scrutiny from their discovery in 1986, copper oxide high-temperature superconductors remain one of the most enigmatic and captivating platforms for emergent many-body phases in condensed matter physics. Understanding the emergent physics of collective electronic orders and excitations across the cuprate phase diagram is a key to decode the puzzle of high-temperature superconductivity and how it arises from the strongly correlated Mott state. With the advance of soft X-ray instrumentations during the last decade, resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering (REXS and RIXS) have rapidly established as highly sensitive and versatile probes of electronic orders and excitations in quantum materials. Using REXS at the Cu-L3 resonance, we investigated the evolution of momentum-space topology of charge correlation in electron-doped cuprates T'-(Nd,Pr)2CuO4[subscript delta] as a function of carrier doping. We revealed that, upon doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in the form of rotationally-symmetric spatial density modulations, which evolve to more conventional long-ranged checkerboard order at higher doping levels. Our charge susceptibility calculations uncover a close link between the topology of charge correlations and the underlying fermiology in electron-doped cuprates and also suggest that the nature of charge correlations changes from locally incoherent charge ripples to a long-ranged broken symmetry state upon carrier doping. Using RIXS, we developed an experimental method to disentangle various electronic excitations in cuprates based on their nature. Our approach is built on the tensorial nature of the RIXS scattering matrix, whose form is imprinted onto the angular dependence of RIXS signal. Applying this method to prototypical magnetically-ordered and superconducting cuprates T'-(Nd,Pr)2CuO4[subscript -][subscript delta] and YBa2Cu3O6.75, we resolved the charge, spin, and orbital character of elastic scattering, (para-)magnon/bimagnon modes, and higher-energy intraband orbital excitations.

Book Synchrotron Light Sources and Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Synchrotron Light Sources and Free Electron Lasers written by Eberhard J. Jaeschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Book Electron Dynamics by Inelastic X Ray Scattering

Download or read book Electron Dynamics by Inelastic X Ray Scattering written by Winfried Schuelke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the dynamics of many-electron systems is of fundamental importance to all disciplines of condensed matter physics. A very effective access to electron dynamics is offered by inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) spectroscopy. The double differential scattering cross section for IXS is directly related to the time-dependent two-particle density correlation function, and, for large momentum and energy transfer (Compton limit) to the electron momentum distribution. Moreover, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) enables the study of electron dynamics via electronic excitations in a very selective manner (e.g. selectively spin, crystal momentum, or symmetry), so that other methods are efficaciously complemented. The progress of IXS spectroscopy is intimately related to the growing range of applications of synchrotron radiation. The aim of the book is to provide the growing community of researchers with accounts of experimental methods, instrumentation, and data analysis of IXS, with representative examples of successful applications, and with the theoretical framework for interpretations of the measurements.

Book The Role of Lattice Coupling in Establishing Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Quasi One Dimensional Cuprates

Download or read book The Role of Lattice Coupling in Establishing Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Quasi One Dimensional Cuprates written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been performed to reveal the role of lattice coupling in a family of quasi-1D insulating cuprates, Ca2+5xY2-5xCu5O10. Site-dependent low-energy excitations arising from progressive emissions of a 70 meV lattice vibrational mode are resolved for the first time, providing a direct measurement of electron-lattice coupling strength. We show that such electron-lattice coupling causes doping-dependent distortions of the Cu-O-Cu bond angle, which sets the intrachain spin exchange interactions. Our results indicate that the lattice degrees of freedom are fully integrated into the electronic behavior in low-dimensional systems.

Book Excitation Spectra of Square Lattice Antiferromagnets

Download or read book Excitation Spectra of Square Lattice Antiferromagnets written by Bastien Dalla Piazza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a qualitative advance in our understanding of quantum effects in layered magnetic materials. The nearest neighbor Heisenberg ferromagnetic ranks among the oldest and most fundamental models of quantum many body effects. It has long been established that in one dimension quantum fluctuations lead to a quantum disordered ground state with fractional excitations called spinons." In two dimensions, the ground state of the Heisenberg model displays static order and to first approximation the dynamics can be described as semi-classical spin waves. Through theoretical advances the author demonstrates that at high energy around particular points in reciprocal space these semi-classical spin-waves deconfine into fractional excitations akin to the one-dimensional spinons. He thereby provides the first explanation of a long-standing experimental observation. In the second half of his thesis Bastien Dalla Piazza develops a unified description of the magnetic excitation spectra of a range of cuprate parent compounds to the high temperature superconductors.

Book Controlling Collective Electronic States in Cuprates and Nickelates

Download or read book Controlling Collective Electronic States in Cuprates and Nickelates written by Martin Bluschke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis chemical and epitaxial degrees of freedom are used to manipulate charge and spin ordering phenomena in two families of transition metal oxides, while taking advantage of state-of-the-art resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) methods to characterize their microscopic origin in a comprehensive manner. First, the relationship of charge density wave order to both magnetism and the "pseudogap" phenomenon is systematically examined as a function of charge-carrier doping and isovalent chemical substitution in single crystals of a copper oxide high-temperature superconductor. Then, in copper oxide thin films, an unusual three-dimensionally long-range-ordered charge density wave state is discovered, which persists to much higher temperatures than charge-ordered states in other high-temperature superconductors. By combining crystallographic and spectroscopic measurements, the origin of this phenomenon is traced to the epitaxial relationship with the underlying substrate. This discovery opens new perspectives for the investigation of charge order and its influence on the electronic properties of the cuprates. In a separate set of RXS experiments on superlattices with alternating nickel and dysprosium oxides, several temperature- and magnetic-field-induced magnetic phase transitions are discovered. These observations are explained in a model based on transfer of magnetic order and magneto-crystalline anisotropy between the Ni and Dy subsystems, thus establishing a novel model system for the interplay between transition-metal and rare-earth magnetism.
