Book RESONANT AND NON RESONANT INELASTIC X RAY SCATTERING IN CuGeO3

Download or read book RESONANT AND NON RESONANT INELASTIC X RAY SCATTERING IN CuGeO3 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides are presently the focus of much attention in condensed matter physics because of the diverse phenomena exhibited by these materials. Examples include antiferromagnetism, superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The origin of these phenomena lies in the strong electron correlations present in these materials which place them between the well understood limits of band insulators and simple metals. The presence of these correlations makes these materials hard to handle theoretically, and there is a need for more detailed experimental work, in particular in regard to the electronic structure and excitations.

Download or read book RESONANT INELASTIC X RAY SCATTERING FROM TRANSITION METAL OXIDES written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in hard x-ray resonant inelastic x-ray scattering as a probe of strongly correlated systems are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to studies of Nd2CuO4. A charge transfer excitation is observed when the incident photon energy is tuned in the vicinity of the copper K-edge. It is shown that the presence of resonant enhancements is controlled by the polarization dependence of the excitation process and by the overlap between a given intermediate state and the particular excitation being studied. This latter observation has shed light on the non-local effects present in certain intermediate states.

Book INELASTIC X RAY SCATTERING AT ULTRAHIGH PRESSURES

Download or read book INELASTIC X RAY SCATTERING AT ULTRAHIGH PRESSURES written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) provides high-pressure research with an arsenal of analytical capabilities for key measurements that were previously unattainable, and high pressure research provides IXS with numerous applications where the technique has unique advantages over other methods. High-pressure investigations can now be conducted using non-resonant IXS, resonant IXS, nuclear resonant IXS, and x-ray emission spectroscopy with energy resolutions of 100 meV to 1 eV for electronic transitions and 1 to 10 meV for phonon studies. By pressure-tuning materials over a wide range, we are able to investigate fundamental physics of electron gases, strongly correlated electron systems, high-energy electronic excitations, and phonons in energy and momentum space. The results will have a profound influence on materials applications as well as providing basic information for understanding the deep interior of the Earth and other planets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key ideas in the condensed matter physics at a low energy scale is to treat an interacting many-body electron system in terms of weakly interacting emergent particles, namely elementary excitations. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has emerged as a powerful tool to study elementary excitations, thanks to the exciting instrumentation improvement and the advent of X-ray synchrotron radiation facilities. By tuning the incident X-ray photon energy to the resonance condition of a specific element, RIXS can resonantly enhance the scattering cross section between the incident photon and the elementary excitation in the material, enabling element-specific measurements. In this dissertation, we investigated magnetic excitations in the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films. Besides a similar crystal structure, the infinite-layer nickelate is nominally isoelectronic to the high temperature cuprate superconductors. At this early stage, it is important to experimentally study the similarities and differences between cuprates and nickelates, particularly the respective electronic and magnetic structures. Here, by utilizing the high-resolution RIXS, we found that the parent compound of the infinite-layer nickelate is not a charge-transfer material, like cuprates. Instead, it is probably closer to a Mott compound with an additional coupling with rare-earth metallic states. Furthermore, we also found a branch of dispersive magnetic excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV in the parent compound nickelates. Although these modes are significantly damped, they are reminiscent of the spin-wave of strongly coupled, anti-ferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice. Upon doping, the spectral weight and energy decrease slightly, while the modes become overdamped. The dispersion, doping dependence, damping effect of the magnetic excitation, and the added complexity due to the presence of the rare-earth metallic pockets, together with its comparison with the magnetic excitation in cuprates, will be discussed.
