Book Giant Resonances and Intermediate Energy Heavy Ions

Download or read book Giant Resonances and Intermediate Energy Heavy Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We briefly explore how large cross sections for excitation of both isoscalar and isovector giant multipole resonances which can be obtained using intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions can be utilized in photon-decay coincidence experiments to provide new information on subjects ranging from basic nuclear structure properties to resonance damping and pre-compound decay. We also discuss experiments in which photon-decay techniques are used as a tag to isolate and identify very weakly excited modes, enabling us to explore such diverse subjects as hadronic excitation of the giant dipole resonance, the distribution of isovector quadrupole strength in 2°8Pb, and the excitation of two-phonon giant resonance strength. 25 refs., 12 figs.

Book Probing The Nuclear Paradigm With Heavy Ion Reactions Proceedings Of The International School Of Heavy Ion Physics

Download or read book Probing The Nuclear Paradigm With Heavy Ion Reactions Proceedings Of The International School Of Heavy Ion Physics written by Ricardo Americo Broglia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-02-22 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major developments have taken place during the last few years in the study of the nuclear paradigm as a result of recent detector and accelerator developments, and of improved theoretical models. The active use of 4-π detectors to measure the gamma decay of excited nuclei has been instrumental in exploring the consequences of extremely high rotational frequencies and excitation energies in the nuclear structure. The identification of superdeformed bands, of limiting temperature for the detection of giant resonances, and of rotational damping, are conspicuous examples of this novel type of research. Studies of the disassembling of the nucleus have been systematically carried out, and the results interpreted in terms of transport models. At even higher temperatures one expects to have a completely new regime of hot dense matter, where the hadronic properties become strongly renormalized by the medium.Furthermore, studies of the properties of the nucleon as a many-body system of quarks and gluons displaying collective degrees of freedom which are damped by couplings to more complicated states, are providing a detailed and consistent picture of the nuclear paradigm.Important progress is also taking place in situations essentially opposite to the scenarios described above, namely in the study of correlations in nuclear matter at very low temperature and density.

Book Excitation and Decay of Giant Multipole Resonances in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Reactions

Download or read book Excitation and Decay of Giant Multipole Resonances in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of intermediate energy heavy ions in the study of giant multipole resonances is explored, with emphasis on gamma decay coincidence experiments. Experiments on 2°8Pb bombarded by 84 MeV/nucleon 17O are discussed and compared with earlier work at 22 MeV/nucleon. The role of Coulomb excitation in the 84 MeV/nucleon data is emphasized and some consequences for study of isovector resonance strength are explored. A comparison of the excitation and decay of the isovector giant dipole resonance in 2°8Pb and 2°9Bi excited with 84 MeV/nucleon 17O scattering is presented. 35 refs., 16 figs., 1 tab.

Book Treatise on Heavy Ion Science

Download or read book Treatise on Heavy Ion Science written by D.A. Bromley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 75 years the stopping of energetic ions in matter has been a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The theoretical treatment of the stopping of ions in matter is largely due to the work of Bohr, 1-3 Bethe,4-6 Bloch,7. s and Lindhard,9-12 and it has been reviewed by Bohr,3 Fano,13 17 20 Jackson,14 Sigmund,15 Ahlen,16 and Ziegler et al. - Soon after the discovery of energetic particle emission from radioactive materials, there was interest in how these corpuscles were slowed down in traversing matter. In 1900, Marie Curie stated 21 the hypothesis that Hies rayons alpha sont des projectiles materiels susceptibles de perdre de leur vitesse en travers ant la matiere." Early attempts to evaluate this were incon clusive for there was not yet an accurate proposed model of the atom. Enough experimental evidence was collected in the next decade to make stopping power theory one of the central concerns of those attempting to develop an atomic model. J.J. Thomson, director of the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory, and Niels Bohr, a fresh postdoctoral scientist at Rutherford's Manchester Laboratory, both published almost simultaneously22. 23 an analysis of the stopping of charged particles by matter, and each contained many of their divergent ideas on the model of an atom. Thomson ignored in his paper the Rutherford alpha-particle scattering 24 experiment of a year before. But the nuclear atom with a heavy positively 25 charged core was the basis of Bohr's ideas.

Book Excitation of Giant Resonances Via Direct Reactions

Download or read book Excitation of Giant Resonances Via Direct Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of electric giant multipole resonances are discussed. The parameters of the giant quadrupole resonance are now firmly established by an extensive set of measurements. The GQR is providing a significant influence in other areas of nuclear physics. The monopole resonance has now been established and its observation has provided the first direct measure of the nuclear compressibility. A strong case for the existence of a giant octupole resonance is now being made through a variety of hadron reactions. However, the supply of giant multipole resonances has not been exhausted. The newer techniques such as higher energy proton scattering, charge exchange reactions, heavy-ion scattering and pion reactions offer considerable hope for identifying new resonances during the next few years.

Book High spin Resonances in Heavy ion Collisions

Download or read book High spin Resonances in Heavy ion Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excitation functions for elastic scattering and reactions of 28Si + 28Si show evidence for the existence of narrow (GAMMA = 100 to 200 keV) high-spin (J approx. = 40 .pi.) resonances. The interpretation of these resonances as high-spin fissioning shape isomers is discussed with reference to data for the 28Si + 3°Si and 3°Si + 3°Si systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant resonances are collective excitations of the atomic nucleus, a typical quantum many-body system. The study of these fundamental modes has in many respects contributed to our understanding of the bulk behavior of the nucleus and of the dynamics of non-equilibrium excitations. Although the phenomenon of giant resonances has been known for more than 50 years, a large amount of information has been obtained in the last 10 years. This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.
