This certainly applies to the design of artefacts, the realisation of which has to meet many constraints and ever raising criteria. The world in which we live today, is enormously influenced by the human race. Over the last century, these artefacts have dramatically changed the living conditions of humans. The present wealth in very large parts of the world, depends on it. All the ideas for better and new artefacts brought forward by humans have gone through the minds of designers, who have turned them into feasible concepts and subsequently transformed them into realistic product models. The designers have been, still are, and will remain the leading 'change agents' in the physical world. Manufacturability of artefacts has always played a significant role in design. In pre industrial manufacturing, the blacksmith held the many design and realisation aspects of a product in one hand. The synthesis of the design and manufacturing aspects took, almost implicitly, place in the head of the man. All the knowledge and the skills were stored in one person. Education and training took place along the line of many years of apprenticeship. When the production volumes increased, -'assembling to measure' was no longer tolerated and production efficiency became essential - design, process planning, production planning and fabrication became separated concerns. The designers created their own world, separated from the production world. They argued that restrictions in the freedom of designing would badly influence their creativity in design.

This report describes the equipment and methodology for in-mold resin flow mapping and control. Mold port arrays are used to achieve directional control of in mold resin flow. A novel flow mapping system based on SMART Weave was implemented and tested. Combining the flow mapping and resin control schemes will lead to closed loop automation of the injection process.

Book excerpt: The resin transfer molding (RTM) process, in which a thermosetting resin is injected into a mold cavity preloaded with a porous fiber preform, is a manufacturing method for producing advanced continuous fiber reinforced composite products with complex geometries. Numerical simulation of resin transfer molding process is an often needed tool in manufacturing design, in order to analyze the process before the mold is constructed. In this study, a numerical simulation of the resin impregnation process in RTM of composite materials is performed by using and modifying an existing simulation program. The parts that are molded in the simulations have their planar dimensions much larger than their thicknesses. Therefore, the mold filling process can be modeled as two dimensional by neglecting the variations along the thickness direction. The program is capable of simulating two-dimensional, isothermal impregnation processes through orthotropic fiber preforms of planar but complex geometries. The formulations of the physical problem, used in this study, were taken from the theory of macroscopic flow through anisotropic porous media. The formulated governing equation and boundary conditions are solved in a regular-geometry computational domain by transformation through boundary fitted coordinate system. The discretization for numerical solution is performed by the finite difference method. The current study extends the existing capabilities of the simulation program by enabling the simulation of impregnation through non-homogeneous fiber preforms. Furthermore, the capability to simulate injection from two gates (as opposed to a single gate injection that existed before) is developed and added to the program. Various one-dimensional impregnation simulations (as parametric studies) are performed to assess the influence of process parameters. Results are also compared with analytical solutions and found to be in agreement with them. Two-dimensional impregnation simulations are.

Book excerpt: A series of polyimide resins with low-melt viscosities in the range of 10-30 poise and high glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of 330-370 degrees C were developed for resin transfer molding (RTM) applications. These polyimide resins were formulated from 2,3,3' 4' - biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (a-BPDA) with 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride endcaps along with either 3,4, -oxyaniline (3,4' - ODA), 3,4, -methylenedianiline, (3,4' -MDA) or 3,3, -methylenedianiline (3,3' -MDA). These polyimides had pot lives of 30-60 minutes at 260-280 degrees C, enabling the successful fabrication of T650-35 carbon fiber reinforced composites via RTM process. Mechanical properties including open hole compression and short beam shear data were collected at room temperature, 288 degrees C and 315 degrees C were determined. These new resin composites showed excellent retention of properties at 315 degrees C (600 degrees F).
