Book Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design

Download or read book Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design written by Michael R. Mitchell and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.

Book The Effects of Processing Residual Stresses on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Structural Materials

Download or read book The Effects of Processing Residual Stresses on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Structural Materials written by Christopher James Lammi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Residual stresses are a common and often undesired result of material processing, introduced through non-linear deformation and/or phase transformation of material under mechanical or thermo-mechanical loading. These macro stresses alter mechanical properties and the intrinsic fatigue crack growth characteristics of the material. Residual stress artifacts can introduce inconsistencies and significant errors when the true material behavior is needed for material development and optimization and for structural component design. The effects of quenching residual stresses on fatigue crack propagation behavior of various materials were investigated. In parallel, residual stresses similar in magnitude and distribution with the quenching residual stresses were generated using mechanical processes to decouple the effects of residual stresses from microstructural effects. Mechanical residual stress distributions predicted by 3D elastic-plastic finite element analysis showed good agreement with the stresses measured on fatigue crack growth testing specimens using fracture mechanics approaches. Crack propagation characteristics in fields with low and high residual stresses were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy, and the effects of residual stress on crack path behavior were assessed. An original residual stress analytical correction to fatigue crack growth data was developed, compared to existing corrective methodologies, and validated using residual stress free data. Overall, the work provides tools to understand, control, and correct the effects of processing residual stresses on fatigue crack growth for accurate fatigue critical design and life predictions.

Book Fracture Resistance of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Fracture Resistance of Aluminum Alloys written by John Gilbert Kaufman and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Kaufman prevents this summary of data on the fracture characteristics of aluminum alloys, broadly based on a publication by Alcoa in 1964, Fracture Characteristics of Aluminum Alloys. Coverage includes tensile properties as indicators of fracture behavior; notched-bar impact and related tests for toughness; notch toughness and sensitivity; tear resistance; fracture toughness; the interrelation of fracture characteristics; toughness at subzero and elevated temperatures; subcritical crack growth; and metallurgical considerations in fracture resistance. Most of the data is presented in only the English/engineering units, contrary to normal ASM International and Aluminum Association, Inc. policies. The author's credentials are not stated. c. Book Welding for Challenging Environments

Download or read book Welding for Challenging Environments written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welding for Challenging Environments documents the proceedings of the International Conference on Welding for Challenging Environments held in Ontario, Canada on October 15-17, 1985. This compilation provides a unique reference to the state of technological development, research, and application of welded fabrications in challenging environments. This book discusses the developments in pulsed gas metal arc welding; pulsed FM-GMA welding; and narrow gap welding of pressure vessels. The fracture toughness considerations for offshore structures; microcomputer method for predicting preheat temperatures; and submerged arc welding of high yield strength steel are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the influence of nitrogen content on deposited weld metal notch toughness gas-metal-slag interactions of binary fluxes containing CaF2 and evaluation of susceptibility of welds made with a stable austenitic welding wire to hot cracking. This publication is a good source for welders and metallurgists, as well as students interested in welded fabrications in challenging environments.

Book Fatigue and Fracture Behaviour of Additively Manufactured Mechanical Components

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture Behaviour of Additively Manufactured Mechanical Components written by Roberto Citarella and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to the fabrication of structural components creates the need for design methodologies supporting structural optimization approaches that take into account the specific characteristics of the process. While AM processes enable unprecedented geometrical design freedom, which can result in significant reductions of component weight, on the other hand they have implications in the fatigue and fracture strength due to residual stresses and microstructural features. This is linked to stress concentration effects and anisotropy that still warrant further research. This Special Issue of Applied Sciences brings together papers investigating the features of AM processes relevant to the mechanical behavior of AM structural components, particularly, but not exclusively, from the viewpoints of fatigue and fracture behavior. Although the focus of the issue is on AM problems related to fatigue and fracture, articles dealing with other manufacturing processes with related problems are also be included.

Book A Methodology for Partitioning Residual Stress Effects From Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Test Data

Download or read book A Methodology for Partitioning Residual Stress Effects From Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Test Data written by M. James and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper described an improved fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) material characterization process that partitioned residual stress effects from the material "true" FCGR behavior, leading to FCGR design curves that are free of residual stress bias. The material used in the program had high residual stress intentionally introduced. Two test methods from the literature were used to characterize the material: the adjusted compliance ratio (ACR) test method for closure correction, and the crack compliance test method for measuring the stress-intensity factor due to residual stress (Kres). Both test methods operated independently on compliance data collected during FCGR tests. Two independent data reduction methods were used to analyze the FCGR data. In the first, the closure corrected ACR data were combined with the Kres data using a power law relationship to normalize the curves into a residual stress free "master" curve, which was then transformed into a more traditional closure free ?Keff curve. In the second, the Kres data were used in a superposition approach along with a closure model to reduce the data directly to the closure free ?Keff curve. The two ?Keff curves were shown to be in good agreement. The closure model was also used to reintroduce the stress ratio effect to generate the familiar da/dN-?K family of design curves that were free of residual stress bias. Validation examples were included where curves for the material with high residual stress were compared with data from similar material that had minimal residual stress, and those results were in good agreement. A summary of fatigue crack growth life predictions was also included to show that when residual stress effects are removed from FCGR characterization data and reintroduced in the fatigue life analysis, fatigue life is predictable within the usual 2x scatter factor for damage tolerance analysis.
