Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mining Industry in North Carolina During 1903 There has been a continual increase in the quantity and value of the production of clay products for a number of years and during 1903 there was a considerable increase in this production. Thus, at the present time, the total value of the production of clay products and kaolin is practically one-half of the total mineral production of the State. Book Clay Deposits and Clay Industry in North Carolina

Download or read book Clay Deposits and Clay Industry in North Carolina written by Heinrich Ries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clay Deposits and Clay Industry in North Carolina: A Preliminary Report The presence of good clays for the better grades of structural mate rial is of itself a matter of importance, as at present nearly all such wares are brought from other States at considerable cost. While the sedimentary bottom clays yield smoother and usually better pro ducts than the residual ones, still experiments and practical tests show that the product made from the latter is materially improved by the proper manipulation. Many of the products are easily accessible, being situated either along navigable rivers or near the intersection of important lines of traffic. As only a portion of the clay deposits has as yet been examined, this must be regarded as a preliminary report. It is expected that these investigations will be continued until the more promising clay deposits in all parts of the State shall have been examined, and a final and more elaborate report will then be prepared for publication. Acknowledgments are due to the clay workers of the State for the uniform courtesy with which they have aided the gathering of informa tion for this report. Download or read book The Mining Industry in North Carolina From 1937 to 1945 Classic Reprint written by Thomas G. Murdock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mining Industry in North Carolina From 1937 to 1945 North Carolina contains a large potential mineral wealth. More kinds of rocks and minerals are found here than in any other southeastern state and perhaps more than many other state of the Union. More than 300 varieties of rocks and minerals in the State have been identified and described. More than 70 of these are known to have economic value and between 40 and 50 have been produced in commercial amounts at one time or another during the present century. Although North Carolina does not contain large deposits of mineral fuels and metals, it is an important producer of non-metallics and/ or industrial minerals. In, the field of non-metallics it is a leading producer of feldspar, primary kaolin, scrap mica and pyrophyllite. The present report covers the mineral industry for the years of 1937 through 1945, and includes statis tical data for 1936 not covered in previous publications. Due to the fact that complete statistics are not avail able until some time after the end of a calendar year, those for 1945 are the latest which are included; and, in the case of some commodities, the 1945 figures were not available when the chapter covering these was prepared. Book Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina Classic Reprint written by Lewis J. Hash and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sillimanite Deposits in North Carolina This report describes the principal Sillimanite deposits in North Carolina. In the first comprehensive report on a new mineral it is desirable to give a complete description of the geology of the mineral, but time allotted to the study did not permit detailed geological studies; therefore, this phase of the report has been kept to a minimum. An attempt has been made to assemble the data in such form that they would be of use to those who are interested in prospecting, mining, and using Sillimanite. The reconnaissance field work has shown that Sillimanite occurs in most all counties west of the cen tral Piedmont area of the State. The major Sillimanite deposits and those offering the best, production possibilities occur in two belts, one located in the upper Piedmont, designated the Cliffside - Elkin belt, and the other located west of the Blue Ridge designated the warne-sylva belt. The authors are aware of Sillimanite occurrences outside of these two principal belts, but most of these other known occurrences are small and appear to be of little economic importance. The two principal belts are SO extensive that it was not feasible to obtain all the desired data. Since the deposits are spread over large areas, one of the problems confronting those interested in the Sillimanite has been that of determining which deposits are best suited for mining and concentration. It is hoped that the data presented in this report will serve to delimit the deposits so that the more promising -ones can be more readily selected.
