Buguma community residents who were primarily into traditional fishing to earn a living can hardly go out for fishing because of pipeline vandalism triggered pollution, rape of women fisher folks and criminal activities such as piracy, kidnapping, theft, etc. in the creeks. It is apparent that there is the loss of livelihood in Buguma thus the establishment of the Buguma fish farm as an intervention project. The researcher on this note develops the nexus to investigate the perception of Buguma residents to the Buguma fish farm and its potential to revitalize the livelihood base of the area. Specific objectives of this study are: to assess the level of awareness of the Buguma aquaculture farm and its products by Buguma community residents, ascertain the residents’ perceptions of the aquaculture farm project and its activities in terms of positive and negative impacts, identify the benefits enjoyed from the Buguma fish farm by the respondents and appraise the operational successes and challenges of the Buguma fish farm development from 2013-2016. This study was undertaken as a mixed method research with the use of convenience and stratified random sampling of households in 28 streets of Buguma. The research design used was the “Triangulation Mixed-Method Design”. The number of questionnaires administered to residents’ households was 384, while the number returned was 376. Data analysis employed descriptive statistical techniques - bar charts, pie charts, histogram with mode and percentages. In general, the result of the research work affirms that there was livelihood loss due to oil pollution from pipeline vandalism; and high level of criminal activities such as kidnapping and robbery but that the Buguma fish farm as an intervention project reinvigorated the livelihood base and improved the living standard of Buguma residents as it opened window of investment opportunities, serve as a tourism destination and provides jobs/ employment for Buguma residents. The researcher designs an agropolitan centre model for the area and recommends effective implementation.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of N-Power Programme on Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the study therefore, are: 1. To ascertain the activities of N-Power Agency towards poverty alleviation in Rivers State, 2. To determine the extent to which N-Power programmes generate empowerment for the youths in Rivers State, 3. To ascertain how N-Power Programmes alleviate poverty in Rivers State, 4. To identify the problems affecting N-Power Agency/programmes towards poverty alleviation in Rivers State. Indeed, the N-Power programme has become a household name and has continued to generate some controversy, although the government is living up to its billing in addressing concerns raised in association with the programme. Explaining the rationale behind the programme, a highly placed government official says, the N-Power Programme of the Federal Government is a job creation and empowerment initiative of the Social Investment Programme, designed to drastically reduce youth empowerment in Nigeria. The focus is to provide our young graduates and non-graduates with the skills, tools and livelihood to enable them advance from empowerment to empowerment, entrepreneurship and innovation.

The primary objective was to evaluate how victims understand causes, effects of gully erosion and effectiveness of erosion control measures in the study area. The research used questionnaire as a tool to examine victims perception of gully erosion in the area. Out of 480 questionnaire administered, 454 were returned and they were used for the analyses. Based on the findings of this study, victims of gully erosion in the area attributed causes to poor construction of culverts, deforestation and termination of drainages in sloppy topography. They agree that gully erosion in the area has resulted to losses of human lives, losses of buildings, displacement of people and losses of productive land. Victims also confirmed damages of infrastructures such as roads, bridges, buildings and altering of transportation corridors. Their responses revealed that gully erosion has resulted to decreased species richness, slowed succession and declining agricultural productivity which means less vegetation cover to soil, less return of organic matter and less biological and nutrient activity.

The percentage yield of 0.2, 0.41 and 0.63 were obtained for 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0M NaOH respectively. The prepared humic acid (HA) was characterized using Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and as well an investigating its surface properties. The spectrum confirmed the presence of surface functional group including -OH, -CO, -COOH. The UV spectrum was featureless typical of humic acids. The surface properties investigation showed that the extracted humic acid (EHA) was a mesoporous adsorbent with pore size between 2-50nm.

The objective of this study is to document this remarkable achievement, and more broadly to review the evidence on a range of issues related to poverty reduction among cocoa farmers in Asikumah-Odoben-Brakwa of the Central Region using the most recent household survey data available The study aims to determine the contributions of cocoa farming activities to household income and consumption; to determine their level of access to basic services ; to determine the contribution of cocoa into the general well-being of the people and to make recommendations on how the cocoa industry could be used to improve the living standard of the Ghanaian rural communities. The study would rely on some comparable selected Core Welfare Indicators Survey (CWIQ) for 1997 and 2003 pertaining to Asikumah-Odoben-Brakwa District. In conclusion, the study found out that cocoa farming coupled with government provision of other social services has contributed in reducing poverty in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District thus most cocoa farming households are above the upper poverty line. Notwithstanding that, the study strongly recommends that government and other key stakeholders look at improving the health needs, provision of decent housing scheme and monitoring the usage of cocoa weighing scales to guaranty fairness.

Book excerpt: This paper combines pre-pandemic face-to-face survey data with follow up phone surveys collected in April-May 2020 to quantify the overall and differential impacts of COVID-19 on household food security, labor market participation and local food prices in Nigeria. We exploit spatial variation in exposure to COVID-19 related infections and lockdown measures along with temporal differences in our outcomes of interest using a difference-in-difference approach. We find that those households exposed to higher COVID-19 cases or mobility lockdowns experience a significant increase in measures of food insecurity. Examining possible transmission channels for this effect, we find that COVID-19 significantly reduces labor market participation and increases food prices. We find that impacts differ by economic activities and households. For instance, lockdown measures increased households' experience of food insecurity by 12 percentage points and reduced the probability of participation in non-farm business activities by 13 percentage points. These lockdown measures have smaller impacts on wage-related activities and farming activities. In terms of food security, households relying on non-farm businesses, poorer households, those with school-aged children, and those living in remote and conflicted-affected zones have experienced relatively larger deteriorations in food insecurity. These findings can help inform immediate and medium-term policy responses, including social protection policies aiming at ameliorating the impacts of the pandemic, as well as guide targeting strategies of governments and international donor agencies by identifying the most impacted sub-populations.
