Book Promoting Residential Energy Conservation Through Real time Consumption Feedback

Download or read book Promoting Residential Energy Conservation Through Real time Consumption Feedback written by Joao Lucas Pereira de Araujo and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well understood that the world energy supplies are being depleted and increasing demand is having a great impact on the environment. The consequent increase on prices and eventual shortages lead to a growing number of individuals who try to seek out ways to use energy more wisely. Nevertheless, the consumer's perception of energy conservation actions results are very inaccurate. Consumer oriented Energy Consumption Display have increasingly become an area of research and development, but there is still a need for investigation on its application in user-oriented products. In this document, we investigate how to develop, from a product and interaction design standpoint, appliances that will give feedback related to energy consumption. The study focused on one specific product, the room air conditioning. The goal was to provide information that would stimulate more efficient use of the air conditioner. Information from many fields informed the development of this product. It includes literature on: (a) the current technology related to air conditioner and other appliances, (b) usability issues, (c) products that already give feedback on consumption and (d) human behavior. Initial concepts were presented to focus groups, along with scenarios. The results from the generative research served as basis for a refined Product Requirements list. The final product includes the interface developed for the air conditioner and a few possible applications. The study generates material that can be applied to other products that consume energy in addition to the air conditioner used in the study. Consumers will not only make decisions on purchases based on efficiency but also change their habits so as to better conserve, bringing us closer to a sustainable energy use, if they are able to have consumption feedback on each appliance.

Book Home Energy Information

Download or read book Home Energy Information written by David C. Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the data required to measure and manage energy consumption in residential buildings. This book describes energy information in detail so that any homeowner can measure energy use on a continuing basis, make decisions regarding how to conserve energy, implement improvements, then monitor the results of those improvements. In the past, it has been difficult to collect residential energy consumption data in real-time. This book helps overcome that challenge by teaching readers how to use self-installed data collection devices that monitor consumption of circuits or appliances, along with freely available information to benchmark against other homes in the area. It demonstrates how information derived from many sources, such as the kWh listed on an electric bill, can be combined into simple calculations that illuminate how well conservation efforts are working from day to day, month to month, or year to year. Homeowners have ultimate control over the decision making process required to realize energy savings. This book simplifies the tasks of collecting, calculating and reporting energy information to the homeowner, putting the power to conserve energy in the hands of the people who will ultimately benefit the most directly from conservation efforts.

Book Evaluation Plan for the Bonneville Power Administration Residential Energy Conservation Programs

Download or read book Evaluation Plan for the Bonneville Power Administration Residential Energy Conservation Programs written by Eric Hirst and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed plan is presented for evaluation of the residential energy conservation programs offered by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) to the utilities in its four-state region. The steps suggested to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the program are concisely stated, and include: evaluation planning, data collection and processing, analysis of evaluation issues (energy savings, cost-effectiveness, differences between participants and nonparticipants, and comparison of heat loss methodology results with data), and evaluation outputs. The programs to be evaluated include the shower flow restricter program, water heater wrap program, and the residential weatherization program.
