Book Community Associations

Download or read book Community Associations written by Donald R. Stabile and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history human beings have formed communities spontaneously with residences constructed haphazardly. Today a new type of community is emerging—one planned from the start regarding housing location, style, and governance. These Community Associations (CAs) have increased in number from 500 in 1960 to 205,000 in 1998. This book explores the issues surrounding this housing innovation and provides a history of community associations and their membership organization, the Community Associations Institute (CAI). The book explores the process of trial and error in the design of CAs and how the CAI was set up to help them work. It opens with a consideration of the economics of land, housing, and community associations; explores the social, intellectual, legal background for CAs; and surveys their development in the United States. After considering the FHA's role, the book focuses on the development of the CAI .

Book Neighborhood Politics

Download or read book Neighborhood Politics written by Robert Dilger and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1992-09 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of residential community associations in the American intergovernmental system of governance. Residential community associations (RCAs) have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years, yet their significance and impact remains largely unexamined Robert Jay Dilger here identifies the extent and nature of the services and operations provided by RCAs, documents their development as a housing and land use planning innovation, and analyzes their role in acting, in many ways, as a substitute for local governments. Dilger illustrates the many ways in which RCAs are influential actors in the American political and intergovernmental process. Examining this impact of RCAs on local politics, he also extrapolates to determine the implications of their proliferation for American governance and democratic values. Economic conditions and consumer preferences suggest, he argues, that RCAs will continue to play an vital role in American governance well into the 21st century. Essential reading for anyone interested in public policy, local politics and government, this book is the definitive account of these increasingly powerful organizations.

Book Community Association Law

Download or read book Community Association Law written by Wayne S. Hyatt and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the pioneering Hyatt and French Community Association Law coursebook is an ideal vehicle for introducing students to this increasingly important subject. From housing just 2 million Americans in 1970, common interest communities had grown to house 57 million, or 19% of the American population, by 2006. Community associations, which manage these communities, bear similarities to not-for-profit corporations, municipal governments, and trusts, but are different. The evolving body of community association law draws from all these fields but reflects the unique character and needs of common interest communities. Reflecting the expertise of its authors, the book combines academic rigor and practical knowledge. Primary materials include important cases, statutes (including proposed revisions to UCIOA), the Restatement (Third) of Property, Servitudes, and references to the growing body of literature on gated communities, co-housing developments, private governments, and other property regimes used to avoid the tragedy of the commons in groups that hold common property.

Book Fortress America

Download or read book Fortress America written by Edward J. Blakely and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gated communities are a new "hot button" in many North American cities. From Boston to Los Angeles and from Miami to Toronto citizens are taking sides in the debate over whether any neighborhood should be walled and gated, preventing intrusion or inspection by outsiders. This debate has intensified since the hard cover edition of this book was published in 1997. Since then the number of gated communities has risen dramatically. In fact, new homes in over 40 percent of planned developments are gated n the West, the South, and southeastern parts of the United States. Opposition to this phenomenon is growing too. In the small and relatively homogenous town of Worcester, Massachusetts, a band of college students from Brown University and the University of Chicago picketed the Wexford Village in November of 1998 waving placards that read "Gates Divide." These students are symbolic of a much larger wave of citizens asking questions about the need for and the social values of gates that divide one portion of a community from another.
