Book excerpt: Print and television in India came under fire in the year 2006 when they adopted a biased attitude against the state policy of affirmative action that made provisions to admit students of the downtrodden communities into central government-run institutes of higher education. The media, forgot the ethics of being balanced, attacked this policy of positive discrimination and gave intense coverage to every anti-reservation protest that took place in India. In a way, the national media led the struggle against social justice. Here we use Fuzzy Super FRM Models to analyze the role of the news media in covering the issue of reservation for Other Backward Classes in Indian central government institutions like IITs, IIMs and AIIMS.

Book Corrupt Inept Rudderless Politicians

Download or read book Corrupt Inept Rudderless Politicians written by Sat Sharma and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People living on the Indian subcontinent have been a sharply divided lot for a very long time in spite of belonging to the same established respected older civilization. Our divisiveness resulted in inviting repeated assaults by uncivilized Arabs and savages from other parts of Asia. This led to foreign subjugation for a millennium first by Islamic invaders and looters; then by Europeans who came as traders but became rulers. The entry of aliens led to unabashed proselytizing into their newer religions. It may not be wrong to say that 99 percent of Muslims and Christians living on the subcontinent are converts from Hinduism (that has been more a way of life rather than a watertight religion for two millennia or more). This means todays inhabitants are from the same civilization and culturally speaking Hindustanis. However, a proliferation of alien religions did aggravate and compound divisiveness. The British ruled the country for two centuries or so, and did the maximum damage to our character, morale and psyche. After the First War of Independence the British promulgated pretty stiff laws especially the Police Act of 1861 to keep their slaves under tight leash. Worse still they introduced Macaulay system of education in English to wean us away from our cultural moorings, heritage, literature, moral values and our own Sanskrit language. Indian social religious and educational reformers Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Sahjanand, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Swami Dayanand Sarasvati, Swami Vivekananda and Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh as well as the likes of them brought back the pride of our civilization and culture. Their influence was apparent from the beginning of 19th century in the fields of politics, public administration, and education, as well as strengthening Hinduism. This first awakening from slumber or hibernation ignited the minds of revolutionaries who selflessly and untiringly worked hard on the soils of the subcontinent and the foreign lands culminating in throwing out deeply entrenched British lock, stock and barrel. Not so nationalistic but opportunistic Congress party led by their self-serving trio of stalwarts Gandhi, his adopted son Nehru and lieutenant Patel got the subcontinent partitioned and formed government in divided India. Congress party ruled but NOT served Hindustan for 90 percent of the time since independence by strictly following British Divide and Rule policy to perfection without changing/improving archaic British laws. Being communal, Congress aggravated the divisiveness thus bringing untold misery to the masses in the form of communal strife and Hindu-Muslim riots repeatedly. The prolonged misrule by those corrupt inept rudderless politicians including the decade under its economist dummy PM heading the most corrupt and arrogant government ever in the history of independent country brought in lawlessness, fragile environment, grossly inadequate infrastructure, increasing terrorism and Maoism/Naxalism, ever mounting inflation, sky-rocketing corruption, gargantuan scams, bankrupt economy, policy paralysis, stalling of reforms, and what not. The absolute number of the poor today is far more than total population of newly born country in 1947. This grave crisis-like situation warranted a second awakening in 21st century. Expectedly Hindustanis rose to the occasion once again, decimated the corrupt Congress and voted for a change by electing a visionary, strong, and honest PM from BJP with a thumping majority. This gentleman is a dynamic, focused, highly optimistic, staunchly nationalistic real leader unlike the pygmies of Congress. The task ahead is dauntingly stupendous. Modi started showing promise during his first 60 days. The damage done in 60 years may take ten years, if not more, to repair and actual proper turnaround thus placing this once great country on track to reclaim its lost genuine glory. Although independence was ushered in 67 years ago yet freedom is still awaited. That will require imminent electoral, intellectual, judicial, police, political and social reforms together with building moral character and bringing meritocracy in every appointment by doing away with the Congress policy of favours, quotas and reservations for the undeserving. Very much like Narendra Modi, the first PM to be born after independence and heading the youngest India-educated ministry, all of us have to remain optimistic and vigilant. We must perform our duties diligently as law-abiding faithful but demanding citizens alive to the times!

Book Affirmative Action Matters

Download or read book Affirmative Action Matters written by Laura Dudley Jenkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affirmative Action Matters focuses specifically on affirmative action policies in higher education admissions, the sphere that has been the most controversial in many of the nations that have such policies. It brings together distinguished scholars from diverse nations to examine and discuss the historical, political and philosophical contexts of affirmative action and clarify policy developments to further the meaningful equality of educational opportunity. This unique volume includes both well established and emerging policies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, policies which developed under a variety of political systems and target a range of underrepresented groups, based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, social background, or region. Accessible and thought provoking case studies of affirmative action demonstrate that such policies are expanding to different countries and target populations. While some countries, such as India, have affirmative action policies that predate those in the United States, affirmative action is a recent development in countries such as Brazil and France. Legal or political pressures to move away from explicitly race-based policies in several countries have complicated affirmative action and make this assessment of international alternatives particularly timely. New or newly modified policies target a variety of disadvantaged groups, based on geography, class, or caste, in addition to race or sex. International scholars in six countries spanning five continents offer insights into their own countries’ experiences to examine the implications of policy shifts from race toward other categories of disadvantage, to consider best practices in student admission policies, and to assess the future of affirmative action.

Book In Search of Inclusive Policy

Download or read book In Search of Inclusive Policy written by Sukhadeo Thorat and published by Rawat Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India, addressing the problem of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) through the governmental policy of OBCs quotas in higher education institutions, and subsequently passing of an Act by the Parliament, has renewed the debate on reserving space and other related issues regarding these individuals. This volume brings together selected and exceptionally insightful papers - which have appeared in the journals, newspapers etc. - dealing with every conceivable dimension of this reservation policy in general, and for the OBCs in particular. The detailed introduction of this volume familiarizes the lay reader with the complex debate on OBC reservations. The editors contextualize the issues of social exclusion in Indian society associated with multiple group identities like caste, ethnicity, religion, gender, and other forms of exclusion. They also discuss the theoretical framework for developing inclusive polices to deal with the consequences of historical exclusion, as well as the safeguards against continuing discrimination in the present. In the end, they propose that, given the multiple forms of exclusion associated with group identities, the nature of inclusive policy should be such that it addresses the group-specific problem, depending on the nature of discrimination and resulting educational, social, and economic situations.
