Book From W rttemberg to the New World

Download or read book From W rttemberg to the New World written by Bret A Matz and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Württemberg to the New World explores the history of eleven generations of the Matz family, and each generation has a story to tell. It is a history shared by millions of Americans whose heritage can be traced back to the western German lands, from the Upper to the Lower Rhine. Beginning in early seventeenth-century Europe, topics include the Reformation, illegitimate births in the old country, immigration in the 1700s to settlements in eastern Pennsylvania, German immigrant attitudes toward slavery, the Industrial Revolution, American Progress, and Pennsylvania German folk art (fraktur). The Thirty Years' War, the wars of King Louis XIV of France, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War are all an essential part of the story, always told with an emphasis on how these conflicts affected the common people. While chronicling the Matz family's journey across Pennsylvania, the narrative touches upon the Germantown Settlement, the Palatine community in the Tulpehocken, the early settlers of Schuykill County, the founding of Annville in the Lebanon Valley, educational institutions prior to the establishment of public schools, and the origin of the Lebanon Valley College. In addition to the Matz surname, readers with Ulrich or Stauch (Stough, Stouch) in their family tree may discover their ancestor's immigration story within these pages. This book combines two of the author's passions: history and art. Dozens of color images, ranging from the German Renaissance and Dutch Golden Age to Pennsylvania folk art, accompany the narrative and were selected with three criteria in mind: one, the artist or artwork has some connection to the old country or Pennsylvania; two, the work is of a high caliber as judged by history and the art community; and three, the subject matter has a direct relationship to the story. The paintings reproduced in this paperback edition appear less vivid than the originals; select the hardcover edition for high-quality images of the artwork printed in premium color.

Download or read book Pennsylvania Genealogies written by William Henry Egle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pennsylvania Genealogies: Scotch-Irish and German by William Henry Egle is an artful attempt by Eagle to address a grossly neglected area of this history of his great state. For years Egle labored over this publication and his dedication and passion ring through each well-researched page. The book serves as a complete reference for several groups and families found in historic Pennsylvania with Scotch-Irish and Germanic roots. With this work, Egle hopes to provide readers with a resource that will allow them to investigate their family trees and the roots that link them back to Scotland, Ireland, and Germany. Some of the families in the text have roots reaching all the way back to the beginning of United States history with records to support their level of impact on the development of the nation. In addition, some of the families that Egle covers had yet to ever be discussed in a published work and therefore established vital information for researchers interested in these families and their histories in the U.S. Egle also links several families to well known historic figures such as George Washington. For the academic researcher and the contemporary genealogist, Pennsylvania Genealogies: Scotch-Irish and German is a critical source to understand and trace dozens of pivotal Pennsylvanian families. William Henry Egle offers a thorough discussion of each family, exploring both their history in the United States and their links back to different parts of Europe. Egle's passion for this subject makes this text an interesting read not just for the history scholar but also for any reader who is researching their own roots and family tree.
