Book Researches on Fungi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Researches on Fungi Classic Reprint written by A. H. Reginald Buller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on Fungi These pages contain a contribution to the physiology, mor phology, and physics of reproduction in the Hymenomycetes, and also a record of some observations upon the discharge of spores of 'ascomycetes and of Pilobolus. Naturally many problems have been left unsolved, but I hope that the new data obtained will give an added interest to some of our commonest plants. The delicate adaptations of structure to function, as revealed by a study of the fruit-body of a Mushroom, a Coprinus comatus, or a Polyporus, have provided me with no small cause for wonder ment and delight, and they seem well worthy of the attention of all those who desire to understand more fully the vegetable world by which they are surrounded. The value of the more purely physical work must be left to physicists to decide. How ever, as showing how closely the various branches of science may be knit together, it is not without interest that the first direct i test of Stokes' Law for the fall of microsc0pic spheres in air has been carried out with the help of a lowly Cryptogam. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies Upon Some Chromogenic Fungi Which Discolor Wood The work of investigation has been undertaken primarily on account of the value of the knowledge which might accrue through the study of the chromogenic fungi or bacteria which are concerned in the color reactions which take place in stained lumber; yet, on the other hand, the economic value of the work has not been lost sight of, owing to the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the lumber industry each year due to the lowering of the grade of lumber in piles through the rapid action of many tiny wood staining fungi. In the study of the fungus ora of the lumber pile a large number of forms have been observed not all of which discolor the substratum upon which they grow. Attention has been given not only to those which penetrate wood deeply and stain it, but also to those which discolor it only superficially. Book Studies of American Fungi Mushrooms

Download or read book Studies of American Fungi Mushrooms written by George Francis Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of American Fungi Mushrooms: Edible, Poisonous, Etc Value of Form and Characters - The different kinds of mushrooms vary in form. Some are quite strikingly different from others, so that no one would have difficulty in recognizing the difference in shape. For example, an umbrella-shaped mushroom like the one shown in Fig. I or 81 is easily distinguished from a shelving one like that in Fig. 9 or 188. But in many cases different species vary only slightly in form, so that it becomes a more or less difficult matter to distinguish them. In those plants (for the mushroom is a plant) where the different kinds are nearly alike in form, there are other characters than mere general form which enable one to tell them apart. These, it is true, require close observation on our part, as well as some experience in judging of the value of such characters the same habit of observa tion and discrimination we apply to everyday affairs and to all departments of knowledge. But so few people give their attention to the discrimination of these plants that few know the value of their characters, or can even recognize them. Book Introduction to the Study of Fungi

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Fungi written by M. C. Cooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Fungi: Their Organography, Classification, and Distribution, for the Use of Collectors The Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany, published by Berkeley in 1857, was for a long time the only volume, in English, which could introduce the inquiring student to a systematic knowledge of Fungi. Later on, this work was discovered to be insufficient, inasmuch as it was more suited to the requirements of an advanced student than an inquirer; so that the field was left open for a more popular and ele mentary work, which, under the title of Fungi their Nature, Influence, and Uses, appeared in 1875, subsequently passing through several editions. The rapid advance in knowledge of the life-history and development of these organisms during the past ten years, and especially the large scheme of classification carried out by Professor Saccardo, ' made it essential that, in order to keep pace with the times, a guide and introduction should be prepared and published for the use Of students, which, whilst not superseding the volume of 1875 as a popular instructor, should treat the subject more after the manner of a text-book, adapted to the illustration of recent discoveries, and an explanation of the methods of classification. The following pages are the result of an effort to supply an acknow ledged want, which I have executed under the impression that it is probably my last contribution of any importance to British Mycology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on Fungi, Vol. 2: Further Investigations Upon the Production and Liberation of Spores in Hymenomycetes The essential element Of the hymenium, always present under normal conditions, is the basidium. Typically, this is a club-shaped cell which, on attaining maturity, projects slightly from the general surface Of the hymenium and bears at its free end four sterigmata and four spores. While the vast majority of Species have basidia Of this type, there are exceptions to the general rule. Thus mono sporous basidia are characteristic of Pistillaria maculaecola, di sporous of the cultivated Mushroom (psalliota campestris), trisporous Of Commas narcoticus, hexasporous Of Cantharellus citarias, and octosporous of Corticium coronatum. These and other aberrant types of basidia will be treated of mere fully in Chapter X in a discussion Of the relative position Of the sterigmata. Book The North American Cup Fungi Operculates Classic Reprint

Download or read book The North American Cup Fungi Operculates Classic Reprint written by Fred Jay Seaver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Cup-Fungi (Operculates) The present work is the outgrowth Of studies begun under Professors T. H. Macbride and B. Shimek, while a graduate student in the State University of Iowa, where three years were spent as a research Scholar and later Fellow in botany, and has been continued as a special problem, intermittently, up to the present time. Official connection with The New York Botanical Garden, since the autumn of 1908, has afforded unusual opportunity to collect in the eastern states and the islands of the American tropics. Two expeditions have been made to the Bermuda Islands; the first in company with Dr. N. L. Britton and the late Stewardson Brown of Philadelphia, and the second with Professor H. H. Whetzel of Cornell University; one to the Island of Trinidad, just off the South American Coast, again in company with Dr. Britton; and one to Porto Rico and the American Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. Croix, as guest of the Porto Rican government. All of these trips have furnished valuable data for the work which is now being presented. NO private herbarium has been maintained but all of the collections made by the author have been merged with those of The New York Botanical Garden, which collection is very rich in American and European material. In the course of the work, collecting has been carried on from North Dakota to Colorado and New Mexico and east to New York and New England. No time has been spent in the far west. These collections have been supplemented by material sent, not only from every part of North America, but from nearly every part of the world. Book Mushrooms and Other Common Fungi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mushrooms and Other Common Fungi Classic Reprint written by Flora W. Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mushrooms and Other Common Fungi To judge from the statements of early authors, for many centuries Wild mushrooms have been eagerly collected and eaten, especially in Germany, France, and Italy. Perhaps the only recorded voice of absolute protest came from the' ancient Hindus, Who considered those Who ate mushrooms, Whether springing from the ground or growing on a tree, fully equal in guilt to the slayers of Brahmins. Although early history records the use of mushrooms and the high esteem in Which they Were held by the ancients, it is true that their nutritive value has been greatly exaggerated and is not high and that they are not as life sustaining as meat, in spite of the frequent assertions of enthusiastic mycophagists to the contrary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Morphology and Biology of the Fungi, Mycetozoa and Bacteria I DO not deem it necessary to say anything in explanation of the reasons which have led to the preparation of this translation of Professor de Bary's book on the morphology and biology of Fungi, Mycetozoa and Bacteria. It brings within reach of all English-speaking students the most thorough and comprehensive treatise upon these groups which has appeared in any language; and the picture that is presented of the state of our knowledge of the subject at this time, along with the suggestions and indications of the lines upon which further investigation is especially wanted, will, it is to be hoped, not only instruct readers, but also stimulate them to research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genera of Fungi Questions of nomenclature have necessarily been left largely to one side, but no hesitation has been felt in making certain corrections. These have dealt mostly with mistaken or neglected transliteration, and with faulty composition. A considerable number of sesquipedalian words have been shortened, and the greater number of hybrid names have been corrected. These corrections have been made in such a way as to retain as much of the original name as possible. Corrections are indicated by the sign 'l' with the original form in parenthesis below. New genera are designated by an asterisk, and are listed with their types on a later page. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Fungi: Phycomycetes and Ustilagineae What is a fungus? This question naturally suggests itself as first claiming attention in a work treating exclusively of the fungi, yet in reality the answer can only be clearly understood after some insight has been gained of the peculiarities of structure and mode of life of the fungi as a group, and also of their origin and relationship with other groups of the vegetable kingdom, because a definition of any group consists of the most pronounced morphological and physiological peculiarities possessed generally by its component members; nevertheless, one or two of the leading characters may be given at this stage. Chlorophyll, the green colouring matter so general in the vegetable kingdom, is entirely absent from fungi, and as chloro phyll is an indispensable factor in enabling plants to utilize inorganic matter as food, it follows that fungi cannot. Assimilate inorganic food, but are entirely dependent on organic matter for food, and may be divided into two groups, depending on the condition in which organic matter is used as food; those that obtain their food material from dead organic matter are called saprophytes, such are the fungi growing on B.
