Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book Studies of Optical Augmentation With Picosecond Pulses Picosecond Pulses for Resolution of Optical Elements by Retroreflection

Download or read book Studies of Optical Augmentation With Picosecond Pulses Picosecond Pulses for Resolution of Optical Elements by Retroreflection written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picosecond optical pulses generated by a neodymium-glass mode- locked laser were employed in laboratory measurements of the retro-reflection from optical surfaces. These measurements were directed at a determination of the minimum separation distance between surfaces which could be resolved using either a photodiode or an image converter camera for detection. A minimum resolvable distance of 7.5 cm was obtained with a photodiode, and the camera yielded a value of 1.5 cm. In addition calculations have been made of the range at which the retroreflection technique may be employed for analyzing optical elements using short pulses. Ranges of several kilometers appear feasible.

Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulses with Materials

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulses with Materials written by Chi Hsing Lee and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the summary of the works performed in the entire period of this grant. The two-photon and three-photon photoconductivity effects in various semiconductors were studied. The effect was then applied to measure the ultrashort optical pulses. Two-photon pump GaAs bulk laser action was demonstrated. A theoretical calculation on the optical third harmonic generation with broad band picosecond pulses was made. Finally various aspects of the nonlinear optical interaction at the boundary of nonlinear media were investigated. The data agreed well with Bloembergen and Pershan's theory. The observation of the nonlinear Brewster's angle was reported for the first time in a transparent medium. (Author).

Book Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry

Download or read book Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry written by K.B. Eisenthal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of lasers that can generate light 11 14 pulses ranging from 10- - 10- sec duration, and capable of 13 peak powers in excess of 10 watts scientists have been able to investigate the interactions of light with matter in a time and power domain not previously possible. These ultrashort laser pulses provide a powerful tool for the study of chemical phenomena at the most fundamental level. Many of the elementary processes of importance in chemistry including energy dissipa tion, molecular motions, structural and chemical changes occur on a very short time scale and thus require special approaches. Th~ use of ultrashort laser pulses to perturb and to probe systems of interest affords a direct approach to the time reso lution of very rapid chemical phenomena. It was recognition of the impact of these relatively new approaches to chemical phenomena that motivated NATO to sponsor a meeting on the applications of picosecond spectroscopy in chemistry. The primary aim of the NATO workshop was to gain some perspective on the status of the field in terms of present research activities, technological developments and if possible the difficult task of sensing future directions. The way we decided to approach these issues was to gather together the main contributors to the field, fortunately many of whom were able to attend, to present their work and to participate in what turned out to be lively discussions of the field.

Book Frequency Domain Techniques for Analyzing Picosecond Optical Pulses

Download or read book Frequency Domain Techniques for Analyzing Picosecond Optical Pulses written by John Christopher Swartz and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the techniques of Fourier analysis, any periodic time domain function will have a unique frequency domain transform. It is therefore possible to use frequency domain measurements to understand a time domain signal. Fourier analysis implies that picosecond laser pulses would have frequency components which range into the microwave bands. The technique of picosecond demodulation is one way of generating microwaves from laser pulses. Picosecond demodulation uses laser pulses to generate electron bunches at a photocathode. The electron bunches are then accelerated and radiate electromagnetic waves. Based on this technique it is possible to measure the microwave spectrum of a picosecond optical pulse training. This report develops the theory of picosecond demodulation and shows that the frequency spectrum generated is related to the Fidrier transform of the time domain envelope of the laser pulse train. Based on the theoretical development, a prototype device, called a picosecond demodulator, has been built. Using this device, several experiments are reported which (a) verify the theory of picosecond demodulation and (b) demonstrate that frequency domain techniques can be used to characterize picosecond pulses. These results indicate that frequency domain techniques are easy and inexpensive to implement and provide an accurate supplement to time domain measurements using auto-correlators or streak cameras. Book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials 1 Measurement of Picosecond Pulse Width Using Two Photon Conductivity in GaAs 2 Three Photon Conductivity in CdS

Download or read book The Study of the Interaction of Intense Picosecond Light Pulse with Materials 1 Measurement of Picosecond Pulse Width Using Two Photon Conductivity in GaAs 2 Three Photon Conductivity in CdS written by Chi H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-photon conductivity effect in GaAs has been used to map the second order intensity correlation function of the picosecond laser pulse for the first time. Reproducible data were obtained. The contrast ratio is about 1.8. This is limited by the thickness of the sample. In principle this method can be extended to use very thin sample to obtained subpicosecond time resolution. Three photon induced photoconductivity effect has been observed in CdS polycrystalline sample with a mode-locked Nd:glass laser. The three photo absorption coefficient was measured to be 0.043 cc/G(W sq). (Author).
