Book Another Good Dog One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs

Download or read book Another Good Dog One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs written by Cara Sue Achterberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warm and entertaining memoir about what happens when you foster fifty dogs in less than two years—and how the dogs save you as much as you save them. When Cara felt her teenaged children slipping away and saw an empty nest on the horizon, she decided the best way to fill that void was with dogs—lots of them—and so her foster journey began. In 2015, her Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes. There were the nine puppies at once, which arrived with less than a day’s notice; a heart- worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep. Operation Paws for Homes rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south and shuttles them north to foster homes like Cara’s on the way to their forever homes. What started as a search for a good dog, led to an epiphany that there wasn’t just one that could ll the hole left in her heart from her children gaining independence—she could save dozens along the way. The stories of these remarkable dogs— including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring new book that reveals the wonderful rewards of fostering. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many loveable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on an journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

Book I Never Met a Dog I Didn t Like

Download or read book I Never Met a Dog I Didn t Like written by Miranda McAdams and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the true stories of the author's and her husband's many dogs and cats-from Lizzie, who loved to be dressed up as a witch and give out Halloween treats--to Lucky, whose life was saved just in time--to Anton, who survived distemper, a disease that kills many dogs and cats. All of the animals featured in this book came from animal rescue groups and shelters, with most of them coming from out-of-state kill shelters. For the most part, these animals had problematic behaviors, and were adults, except for the two puppies, Lucky and Anton. Some of these animals growled as their main form of communication to both humans and dogs alike and many of the male dogs marked or were incontinent indoors. Most of the animals needed obedience and leash training, and some dogs exhibited aggression over food, toys, and space. The growling, marking, lack of obedience to basic commands, absence of leash training, and aggressive tendencies all had made these otherwise good-natured animals unattractive to potential and first-time adopters. Another issue that surfaced was the fact that black animals are often overlooked or even avoided by adopters. The chapter, entitled "Ashley, the Black Dog," addresses this unfortunate and widespread prejudice toward black dogs and cats. The author found that it was extremely rewarding to adopt rescue dogs. Although they were difficult at times, she found them to be interesting, challenging, and loveable. She also felt that they had taught her a lot about how to handle dogs with their particular problems. The author also loved adopting the less complicated dogs-the ones who just eat, play, sleep, and lick your hand-like Ashley, Lucky, Pooky, and Gumby. These dogs may not have been the most intelligent dogs, but because of their gentle natures, they got along well with, and balanced out, the author's more difficult and aggressive dogs.

With the hope of encouraging adoption and fostering of rescue dogs, and generosity of time and treasure to local shelters and organizations, Home Sweet Home shares the images and stories of 25 Arkansas rescue dogs. Inspired by her own furry family members, author Grace Vest shares how a simple choice to adopt can rescue canines and humans alike. Through 25 beautiful images and stories, you'll meet dogs like Frankie, the first dog trained to detect thyroid cancer, found in a shopping center parking lot in Little Rock; Rocky, a shining soul found in a New Orleans attic following Hurricane Katrina; and Teddy, surrendered by three families, who found his match in a woman who depends on him to calm her during panic attacks.
