Book Rescue from Beyond the Roaring Forties

Download or read book Rescue from Beyond the Roaring Forties written by Raphael Dinelli and published by Adlard Coles Nautical Press. This book was released on 1998-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vendee Globe Challenge is the ultimate ocean race: a singlehanded circumnavigation, without port of call & without outside assistance. Raphael Dinelli, youngest & least experienced of the sixteen yachtsmen & women to set sail in November 1996 for what was to prove the most dramatic race in its history, was without doubt the luckiest of them all. Here, for the first time, he tells the story of his horrendous capsize & dismasting in the Southern Ocean-the fear, the utter exhaustion, the numbing cold of the Antarctic waters-of his amazing rescue against all odds by fellow skipper Pete Goss (later to receive the Legion d'Honneur from the President of France for his exploit), & of the firm friendship this extraordinary rescue was to cement. This is also the story of a burning mission: to challenge the sea head-on. Dinelli describes the struggle to turn mission into reality, from his earliest years at the leading edge of the then new sport of windsurfing to his departure as an outsider in the Vendee Globe fleet. This is a story of human endeavour, endurance and, ultimately, survival which draws the reader inexorably along through its physical & emotional highs & lows.

  • Author : Lorna Siggins

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Search and Rescue written by Lorna Siggins and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 13 March 2017, the Rescue 116 crew of Capt. Dara Fitzpatrick, Capt. Mark Duffy, Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith took off from Dublin airport just after 2300 hours for a medical evacuation off the west coast. The first indication of disaster came when the crew failed to answer a radio call at 12.46 a.m. At 02.16 hours, sister helicopter Rescue 118 spotted a casualty and debris in the water. There would be no survivors from R116, and extensive searches failed to locate the bodies of two of the four crew. The crash occurred just six months after the loss of another experienced volunteer, Caitriona Lucas from Doolin Coast Guard in Co Clare; and 18 years after the loss of four Air Corps crew who were returning from a night rescue in thick fog off the south-east coast. In Search and Rescue, Lorna Siggins exposes the shocking systemic flaws that led to these tragic deaths, but also looks at successful rescues where, despite all the odds, the courage and dedication of members of the Irish Coast Guard and the volunteers who work with them have saved countless lives, including the dramatic rescue of paddleboarders Sara Feeney and Ellen Glynn off the coast of Clare in 2020.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students, military historians, and casual readers will all find this compelling collection useful in learning about escape strategies, hostage situations, and rescue operations during times of conflict. Great Wartime Escapes and Rescues tells the captivating stories of dozens of escapes and rescues from conflicts dating from the 16th century to present, with extensive coverage of the world wars of the 20th century and the Vietnam War. In addition, escapes and rescues related to terrorist activities and regional conflicts are featured. Some stories of escapes and rescues included in this work have been written about extensively and portrayed in films, including The Great Escape and Captain Phillips' rescue by Navy SEALs. Other stories are less widely known but just as absorbing. The book opens with a detailed introductory essay that illuminates the government policies and tactics various countries have used to rescue soldiers and civilians during wartime, as well as the diverse methods that prisoners of war have used to escape notorious camps and prisons. The entries, organized alphabetically, are augmented by engaging sidebars related to the escapes and rescues.
