Book Republican Realism in Renaissance Florence

Download or read book Republican Realism in Renaissance Florence written by Athanasios Moulakis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1998 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting book, Athanasios Moulakis makes available, for the first time in English, the important essay How to Bring Order to Popular Government, by Renaissance thinker Francesco Guicciardini. In addition to his valuable and lucid translation of the essay, Moulakis provides an engaging analysis of this important work. He shows that, far from representing a revival of ancient republicanism, the long maturation of Florentine constitutional thought_brought to lucid expression by Guicciardini_points to a distinctly modern idea of the republican state. Republican Realism in Renaissance Florence is a unique and important book which will be of great value to historians and political theorists alike.

Book Parties Opposition and Society in West Germany RLE German Politics

Download or read book Parties Opposition and Society in West Germany RLE German Politics written by Eva Kolinsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, originally published in 1984, the author examines the social composition of the electorate, of membership and leadership of West German political parties, as well as their representation and finances. Kolinsky argues that while affiliation and electorates remained distinct, the social composition of party organisations became narrower and more uniform. The book examines how the parties became alienated from contemporary West German society and discusses the difficulties experienced by opposition parties in trying to develop alternative strategies, in particular those of the Green Party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-continuing constitutional debate, within Canada has brought a search today for new constitutional-governmental models of paradigms capable of taking us all safely into the twenty-first century. For students of Contemporary Constitutionalism, no country's experience has been more seriously studied than that of the West German federal state formed out of the three Western zones of Germany in 1949 and endowed with what was then described as a temporary governmental charter, pending final reunification of Germany. This volume is the result of a special bilateral Canadian-German conference organised by the Simon Fraser University and the Goethe-Institut of Vancouver in 1991 on the theme `The Challenge of Contemporary Constitutionalism: Canadian and German Federalism-in-the-Making'. The essays it contains, from many distinguished judges and professors from both countries, form a unique contribution both to scientific knowledge in Constitutionalism and to current ventures in Constitution-making and drafting in a number of countries -- Western and Eastern Europe, North America -- around the world.

Book Constitutional Moments

Download or read book Constitutional Moments written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Constitution” is a rich term in Western political culture, encompassing political and juridical doctrine as well as government practices through the ages. This volume examines “constitutional moments” in history, those occasions or episodes when significant steps were taken in the definition or redefinition of polities. Their actors were writers or politicians, rulers or ruled, who found inspiration in a distant past or instead looked towards a future to be drawn anew. This book sheds light on such moments from Ancient Greece to the present day, mostly in Europe but also in the Ottoman world and the Americas, thereby uncovering a revealing variety of constitutional thinking and action throughout history. Book Between Form and Event Machiavelli s Theory of Political Freedom

Download or read book Between Form and Event Machiavelli s Theory of Political Freedom written by M. Vatter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Machiavelli, political freedom was approached as a problem of the best distribution of the functions of ruler and ruled. Machiavelli changed the terms of freedom, requiring that its discourse address the demand for no-rule or non-domination. Political freedom would then develop only through a strategy of antagonism to every form of legitimate domination. This leads to the emergence of modern political life: any institution that wishes to rule legitimately must simultaneously be inscribed with its immanent critique and imminent subversion. For Machiavelli, the possibility of instituting the political form is conditioned by the possibility of changing it in an event of political revolution. This book shows Machiavelli as a philosopher of the modern condition. For him, politics exists in the absence of those absolute moral standards that are called upon to legitimate the domination of man over man. If this understanding lies open to relativism and historicism, it does so in order to render effective the project of reinventing the sense of human freedom. Machiavelli's legacy to modernity is the recognition of an irreconcilable tension between the demands of freedom and the imperatives of morality.

Book The Austrian Party System

Download or read book The Austrian Party System written by Anton Pelinka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989. Political science in Austria is a relatively young discipline. It began to gradually establish itself in the 60's and only as recently as 1971 was it anchored in the curriculum of Austrian universities as a separate field of study. With the present book in English the editors hope to stimulate the interest of international social scientists in Austria, to overcome language barriers, and to make the topical problems and developments of Austrian democracy accessible to an international reading public. The book is intended to reflect the current state of a discipline-political science. However, it is also to be a contribution to the further development of this discipline. It should stimulate further, intensive and critical occupation with the theme "parties and the party system in Austria."

This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
