Book Required Professional Development in Illinois Rural Schools

Download or read book Required Professional Development in Illinois Rural Schools written by Jo R. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of teaching and learning has changed considerably in Illinois over the past one-half century. Increased pressure to compete in an ever expanding world economy and questions regarding the performance of public school systems has placed schools and teachers at the center of attention in efforts to promote accountability and an increase student performance. Professional development as a requirement for teachers to renew teaching certification and continue working in the teaching profession is one accountability measure implemented by state governments. An inadequate amount of research however, has been conducted regarding the effectiveness of professional development toward improving teaching and student performance in small rural school districts. Even less research has been conducted to determine the perceptions of teachers in those districts regarding the effectiveness of professional development and improvement of their teaching performance. The purpose of the study was to assess the perceptions of teachers in Illinois' small rural schools concerning the effectiveness of required professional development toward improving their teaching performance. To achieve this purpose a questionnaire was mailed to 378 teachers in 11 school districts. The questionnaire data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and cross tabulation tables. The study found that teachers perceive required professional development as effective in increasing their teaching performance, and that level of education and years of teaching experience influenced their perceptions of this effect. In addition, the study found that teachers believe there is a need to improve the state's system for overseeing required professional development and certificate renewal.

Book Expanding the Vision of Rurality in the US Educational System

Download or read book Expanding the Vision of Rurality in the US Educational System written by Yoho, Louise M. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant narratives of US rurality within educational research and literature centers on the Appalachian and southern US perspectives. However, there is a need to add texture and expand the vision of rurality in US schools and education. Expanding the Vision of Rurality in the US Educational System provides readers, especially college and university faculty in pre-service education programs, with a better understanding of the rural students they teach and the rural communities where they will eventually teach. It also attempts to move the discourse beyond the deficit framework for understanding rural communities. Though the book does not ignore barriers in rural communities, it focuses on the strengths and opportunities available to rural educators without depending on the rural idyllic. Covering key topics such as diversity, belonging, and regional rurality, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, policymakers, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
