Book Annotated Bibliography of Colorado Vertebrate Zoology 1776 1995

Download or read book Annotated Bibliography of Colorado Vertebrate Zoology 1776 1995 written by Richard G. Beidleman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation catalogues the writings on the diverse vertebrate species within Colorado's boundaries beginning with the Escalante Expedition, which skirted the western slope a century before Colorado's statehood. Because of its geographical location-between East and West, North and Southwest, its altitudinal range of more than 11,000 feet, and its consequent variety of ecosystems from desert shrub to alpine tundra, Colorado ranks high among the fifty states for its variety of vertebrates. With such an abundance of these vertebrates, biologists and observant laypersons have had much to write about. This comprehensive bibliography is divided into major sections: General Natural History, Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. Each taxonomic group has a general section, followed by listings at taxon levels down to alphabetically-arranged species. The bibliography is especially complete with respect to periodical literature through 1995. Colorado Vertebrate Zoology cites resources for studying both well-researched vertebrates and those needing more study.

Book Mating Systems and Strategies

Download or read book Mating Systems and Strategies written by Stephen M. Shuster and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first unified conceptual and statistical framework for understanding the evolution of reproductive strategies. Using the concept of the opportunity for sexual selection, the authors illustrate how and why sexual selection, though restricted to one sex and opposed in the other, is one of the strongest and fastest of all evolutionary forces. They offer a statistical framework for studying mating system evolution and apply it to patterns of alternative mating strategies. In doing so, they provide a method for quantifying how the strength of sexual selection is affected by the ecological and life history processes that influence females' spatial and temporal clustering and reproductive schedules. Directly challenging verbal evolutionary models that attempt to explain reproductive behavior without quantitative reference to evolutionary genetics, this book establishes a more solid theoretical foundation for the field. Among the weaknesses the authors find in the existing data is the apparent ubiquity of condition-dependent mating tactics. They identify factors likely to contribute to the evolution of alternative mating strategies--which they argue are more common than generally believed--and illustrate how to measure the strength of selection acting on them. Lastly, they offer predictions on the covariation of mating systems and strategies, consider the underlying developmental biology behind male polyphenism, and propose directions for future research. Informed by genetics, this is a comprehensive and rigorous new approach to explaining mating systems and strategies that will influence a wide swath of evolutionary biology.

Book Wild Turkeys in Texas

Download or read book Wild Turkeys in Texas written by William P. Kuvlesky (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bringing together experts on game birds and land management in the state, Wild Turkeys in Texas is the first book in Texas to synthesize the most current information about ecology and management focused exclusively on these three subspecies-the Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris), the Rio Grande wild turkey (M. g. intermedia), and the Merriam's wild turkey (M. g. merriami). Wild Turkeys in Texas addresses important aspects of wild turkey ecology and management in Texas, but its principles are applicable anywhere the Rio Grande, Eastern, and Merriam's turkeys exist. This book marks the continuation of one of the biggest success stories in the research, restoration, and management of the wild turkey in North America"--
