Book excerpt: The comprehensive approach of this authoritative book focuses on vision therapy and addresses surgical and pharmacological treatment of binocular vision problems. Discussion of normal binocular vision lays the foundation for examining poor visual skills, strabismus, ambylopia, various associated conditions, and oculomotor disorders. Each chapter contains a detailed outline, which acts as an excellent review and provides access to basic information and key topics. Numerous summary tables and figures promote focused learning and provide quick access to information. The enhanced "how to" approach provides specific vision training techniques. Explores the management of medical and neurological binocular problems, making this book applicable for primary eye care practitioners as well as specialists in vision therapy. Extensive appendices provide practical, supplemental information. 100 questions with answers and detailed chapter outlines act as excellent review guides. A CD-ROM included with the book contains popular training techniques and forms that can be modified to accommodate specific needs for office use and additional training.

Download or read book Accommodation and Vergence Mechanisms in the Visual System written by Ove Franzen and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference was instigated by a combination of factors: The nature of the problem, the wide spread occupational epidemiology reported on eye symptoms and eye fatigue in the workplace, and the organizers' awareness of the complexity of the scientific and clinical bases of knowledge that might be usefully applied. The introduction of new methods into system neurobiology provides new insights into how we receive and process information from the external world, and act upon it. New, non-invasive methods have opened the way to direct observation of the human brain in action. Due particularly to the interaction between the visual and oculomotor requirements involved, several clinical and scientific fields intersect when these issues are considered. To provide clear vision the accommodative and pupillary mechanisms are used. To maintain binocularity, the ver gence oculomotor system, sensitive to fatigue, must attain congruence with accommodative levels. This accommodation-vergence linkage was a focus of our symposium.

Easy to read and understand, this book is ideal for faculty when designing courses, students studying these topics for the first time, or established practitioners looking for a practical, easy-to-use reference on accommodative, ocular motility, and nonstrabismic vision anomalies.
Download or read book Primary Eye Examination written by Jong-Soo Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive, in-depth, and up-to-date resource on eye examination that will be of great practical value for ophthalmologists and optometrists. The aim is to guide the practitioner through the diagnostic process and the implications for management of the ocular patient, and in so doing to demonstrate that it is possible to reach appropriate decisions on the basis of eye examination. Every year, existing ocular equipment is being upgraded and new diagnostic equipment is appearing on the market. This book reflects recent progress in upgrading by providing information and guidance on the latest innovations in ocular examination and eye testing while also highlighting the continuing important role of the traditional eye test. The coverage accordingly ranges from such long-established techniques as ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, and slit lamp examination through to the latest advances in OCT technologies, digital fundus photography, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, ocular ultrasound, and angiography. The authors hope that the book will assist all practitioners who perform ophthalmologic examinations.

Book excerpt: William Charles Wells (1757-1817) was one of the foremost, and forgotten, American scientists of the eighteenth century. He should be acknowledged as laying the foundations for modern studies of vestibular function as well as eye movements. This book reprints his Essay on single vision with two eyes (1792) and his own Memoir of his life (1818). Wells’ essay on natural selection is reprinted as an Appendix. Wells' experiments and observations on natural phenomena will surprise students of science because of their modernity.

Download or read book Medical Articles by Ophthalmologist William H Bates written by Ophthalmologist William H. Bates M.D. and published by Mary I. Oliver, Clark Night. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. William H. Bates discovered Natural Eyesight Improvement, 'The Bates Method'. His Experiments prove that tension in the outer eye muscles (oblique and Recti) disrupt, change the shape of the eye and focus of light rays in the eye resulting in; unclear close and distant vision, astigmatism, crossed, wandering eyes, cataract, glaucoma and other abnormal eye conditions. He proved that the outer eye muscles, (oblique) when relaxed, contracting, un-contracting normally change the shape of the eye to normal to produce clear close and distant vision. Relaxed ciliary, iris, tear gland and other inner, outer eye muscles also function correct, produce clear vision, healthy eyes. Mental, emotional strain, tension, using the eyes incorrect is the main cause of outer eye muscle, eye tension and unclear vision. Dr. Bates proved that relaxation of the mind, body, outer eye muscles results in a return of the eye to normal shape with correct focus of light rays in the eyes, on the retina with clear vision at all distances, removal of astigmatism and other eye problems, keeps the eyes healthy with normal circulation, eye pressure, correct function of the optic and other eye, visual system nerves. Abnormal pressure, tension, pulling on/in the eye, lens, retina is removed. The eye muscles; outer (oblique, recti & muscles for blinking, tears...) and inner (ciliary, iris... muscles near and attached to the lens) function correct producing perfect; convergence, accommodation for clear close and reading vision, divergence, un-accommodation for clear distant vision. Shifting 'eye movement' with Central-Fixation (central vision) and function of the retina, lens, brain, entire visual system are perfect. A few of Dr. Bates older articles were based on the beliefs of most Ophthalmologists. As Dr. Bates cured his own vision naturally, treated his patients, performed experiments on the eyes, eye muscles, nerves-he changed his view on accommodation and other eye functions. He then practiced, applied natural eye, vision treatments without the use of eyeglasses, surgery, drugs. This is the origin of Natural Eyesight Improvement. Dr. Bates recorded all his natural treatments, work in his Clinic in New York City, U.S.A. and other hospitals, locations during his lifetime in his book 'The Cure Of Imperfect Sight By Treatment Without Glasses' & 11 years, 132 Issues of his Monthly Better Eyesight Magazine. Eyeglasses are often prescribed unnecessarily or 'too strong' (over-corrected) due to temporary nervousness, pressure to hurry, limited, incorrect eye, head, neck, body movement during an eye exam. Eye doctors also prefer to prescribe an 'extra stronger strength' to the eyeglass lenses. All eyeglasses, especially strong eyeglass lenses, bifocals, astigmatism lenses, sunglasses cause fast, increased vision impairment and prescriptions for stronger eyeglass lenses. This leads to increased vision impairment, cataracts and other eye health, vision impairment. Download or read book Communication Accommodation Theory written by Howard Giles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people modify their ways of speaking, writing, texting, and e-mailing, and so on, according to the people with whom they are communicating. This fascinating book asks why we 'accommodate' to others in this way, and explores the various social consequences arising from it. Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), revised and elaborated over the past 40 years, has been applied to a wide range of situations, from families to courtrooms, and from media to hospitals, by means of diverse methodologies in many disciplines, and across numerous languages and cultures. Bringing together a team of experts, this book demonstrates how the theory can help us towards a greater understanding of interpersonal communication in a multitude of contexts. Finally, it examines the principles of the theory, identifying a range of avenues along which research can move forward in future.
