Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theological Tracts, Vol. 2: Selected and Original Jeremy Tatlor, one of the great names in English theology and literature, was born at Cambridge in 1613. His parents were in humble circumstances, but he had the honour of being a lineal descendant of Dr. Rowland Taylor, who suffered death at the stake on Aldham Common, near Hadleigh, in the third year of Queen Mary," amid the blessings and lamentations of his parishioners, and with a courageous and kindly cheerfulness which has scarcely its parallel even in those days of religious heroism." At three years of age he was sent to the Grammar school, and when thirteen years he was entered at Caius College, in his native city, as a sizar or poor scholar. Shortly after becoming Master of Arts in 1633, having previously been admitted to Holy Orders, he was for a time employed as Lecturer in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and from his youth as well as his eloquence excited great attention. In 1636 he procured a fellowship in All Souls College, Oxford, through the influence of Archbishop Laud, who also nominated him one of his Chaplains, and obtained for him the living of Uppingham, where, having married, he settled in 1640. In 1612, he was created D. D., previous to which he had been made Chaplain in Ordinary to Charles I., before whom he frequently preached, and whom he attended in several of his campaigns against the Parliament. - On the Parliament becoming victorious his living was sequestered, and he retired to Wales, and was hospitably received by the Earl of Carberry at Golden Grove, where he produced many of the works by which he has immortalized himself and enriched British literature. Book Tracts for the Times Vol 2

Download or read book Tracts for the Times Vol 2 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts for the Times, Vol. 2: 1834-5 IN completing the second volume of a publication, to which the circumstances of the day have given rise, it may be right to allude to a change which has taken place in them since the date of its commencement. At that time, in con sequence of long security, the attention of members of our Church had been but partially engaged in ascertaining the grounds of their adherence to it; but the imminent peril to which all that is dear to them has since been exposed, has naturally turned their thoughts that Way, and obliged them to defend it on one or other of the principles which are usually put forward on its behalf. Discussions have thus been renewed in various quarters, on points which had long remained undisturbed; and, though numbers continue undecided in opinion, or take up a temporary position in some one of the hundred middle points which may be assumed between the two main theories in which the question issues, and others, again, have deliberately entrenched themselves in the modern or ultra-protestant alternative, yet, on the whole, there has been much hearty and intelligent adoption, and much respectful study, of those more primitive views maintained by our great Divines. As the altered state of public information and Opinion has a necessary bearing on the efforts of those who desire to excite attention to the subject, (in which number the writers of these Tracts are to be included, ) it will not be inappropriate briefly to state in this place, what it is conceived is the present position of the great body of Churchmen with reference to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reprint of Two Tracts: 1, an Essay on Gleets; 2, an Enquiry Into the Nature, Cause, and Cure of a Singular Disease of the Eyes The two tracts here reprinted were written in English by Jean Paul Marat during his residence in Church Street, Soho, where he practised as a Physician. Both of the tracts are exceedingly rare. Speaking of the former one, Mr. Morse Stephens, in his article on "Marat" in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, says, "no copy is to be found." Since the date of Mr. Stephens's notice of Marat a copy has come to light, and is now in the possession of Dr. J. F. Payne. Of the latter tract there is only one known copy: this is in the Library of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. I have to thank the Council of the Society and Dr. Payne for their kindness in allowing copies of the pamphlets to be made for the purpose of publication. The first tract is dedicated to the Worshipful Company of Surgeons in London, and is dated November 1775. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts on the Mass It would have been more natural to print the two Sarum Ordinaries of the Mass, one Of the fourteenth the other of the thirteenth century, side by Side. But it was not determined to include in this collection the ordinary of the thirteenth century until after the greater part of the volume had been printed, and the thirteenth century order thus stands by itself at the end of the collection. Download or read book Locke s Two Treatises of Government written by Richard Ashcraft and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume guides the reader through a detailed examination of the text to an understanding of Locke’s political ideas in relation to his writings on philosophy, education, religion and economics and the influence these ideas had upon eighteenth-century political theorists. The author shows how Locke carefully constructed his political perspective as a defence of the principles of natural rights, constitutional government and popular resistance. He offers an original interpretation of the Two Treatises..., emphasizing the specific ways in which Locke’s political purposes in writing the work influence his discussion of such concepts as the state of nature, property, consent and tyranny. The author discusses the historical and biographical context of the work and demonstrates how eighteenth century political thinkers developed or rejected aspects of Locke’s political theory and summarizes important recent studies of Locke’s work.

Sixty thousand copies of this pamphlet were sold within days; and a cheap edition was issued which sold twice as many copies. It is said that his pamphlet had a part in determining the Americans to declare their independence. A second pamphlet on the war with America and the debts of Great Britain, followed in the spring of 1777. Price was a consistent critic of war in general and the corrupting effects of growing government debt.

Download or read book John Payne Collier written by Arthur Freeman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Payne Collier (1789–1883), one of the most controversial figures in the history of literary scholarship, pursued a double career. A prolific and highly influential writer on the drama, poetry, and popular prose of Shakespeare’s age, Collier was at the same time the promulgator of a great body of forgeries and false evidence, seriously affecting the text and biography of Shakespeare and many others. This monumental two-volume work for the first time addresses the whole of Collier’s activity, systematically sorting out his genuine achievements from his impostures. Arthur and Janet Freeman reassess the scholar-forger’s long life, milieu, and relations with a large circle of associates and rivals while presenting a chronological bibliography of his extensive publications, all fully annotated with regard to their creditability. The authors also survey the broader history of literary forgery in Great Britain and consider why so talented a man not only yielded to its temptations but also persisted in it throughout his life.
