Inevitably it must reflect some characteristics of many predecessors, and to all of these the author desires to make every due acknowledgment of indebtedness. Procedures have been discussed in relation to their essential features, underlying principles, and varied applications. A large amount of space has been devoted to iodometric processes both on account of the beauty and accuracy of these methods, constantly growing in recognition, and because the treatment in the more elementary text-books is usually scanty. The arrangement of the subject matter is such as to permit the selection of a narrower course or a broader course, as may be desired, without detriment to the logical sequence of topics. Explicit directions are given for certain representative experimental processes, but if wider practice is desired the general description of related processes should make it possible to adapt to these the specific directions given for the representative experimental processes. The value of collateral reading in stimulating interest and in amplifying information is recognized, and, inasmuch as access to the periodical literature is frequently difficult, references in respect to further information have been made, so far as seemed practicable, to a few easily accessible books, in which further reference to original sources may usually be found, if needed. The text-books available did not give as thorough and at. the same time as comprehensive a view of the subject as seemed desirable. In order to present the subject from the theoretical as well as from Che practical standpoint, reference by the student to a very considerable number of text-books and journals seemed necessary. This was largely due to the fact that each author has given special prominence to a particular branch of the subject, such as gravimetric, electrolytic, volumetric, or gas analysis. In the present text-book the endeavor has been made to accord each of these subjects the relative prominence which is justified by the extent to which the methods concerned are actually used. Obsolete methods and new methods which have not come into general use have generally been excluded. In the arrangement and presentation of the subject-matter the needs of the student rather than the experienced analyst have been kept continually in view The needs of the student have been taken to be the acquisition of a thorough comprehension of the reasons for each step in an analysis as well as the development of the skill in manipulation which is necessary in rapid and accurate work. It is believed that by this method the requirements of the professional chemist will also be best served when a reference book is needed. The order in which the various general methods are taken up is that used by the author in instructing his classes. Every doubtful point has been rigidly subjected to repeated experiments, errors corrected and faults amended, and many new processes added from the Author's ample experience in his own laboratory." Among the additions there introduced, the volumetrical methods of determining the constituents of commercial articles were pointed out as particularly important for economizing time, and assisting in every way the practical chemist. The entire work has been re-cast, considerably simplified, and almost re-written. New matter has been introduced to the extent of one-fourth of the whole volume. Many of the processes the best then known, but rendered obsolete by the progress of the science - have been replaced by others more certain, simple, and efficient; and this is particularly the case with the volumetrical processes. Among other changes, I may specify the analytical processes for clays, soils, cast iron, atmospheric air, and lead ores. This work on Quantitative Analysis, although in itself complete, may be regarded as a sequel to the Author's Qualitative Analysis - a work which has been found of the highest value - nay, almost indispensable - to the student of chemistry, whatever other books on the subject he may possess. As a guide to Analytical Chemistry, the merits of the present volume are of the highest order. The arrangement is simple, methodical, and consecutive; the theoretical explanations are appropriate, clear, and intelligible; the language plain, and the directness and honesty of purpose, together with the just appreciation of the labors of others displayed throughout, must commend it to every one engaged in studying, teaching, or practising Chemistry; and I have great pleasure in being the medium of presenting it to the English public.
