Book Representative English Comedies Vol 3

Download or read book Representative English Comedies Vol 3 written by Charles Mills Gayley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative English Comedies, Vol. 3: With Introductory Essays and Notes In the second volume of this series the comedy of Jonson and others was considered. In this the history of the type is continued to the closing of the theatres in 1642, and six of the plays written by Shakespeare's later contemporaries are presented and discussed. Those of Dekker, Massinger, and Brome, since they were published during the lifetime of the authors, are reproduced from the original quartos. Those, on the other hand, of Middleton and Rowley, and Fletcher, which found their way into print only after their authors were dead, are, in conformity with the rule adopted for the series, presented in critical texts based upon collation of the quartos with other early editions; and, for reasons set forth by Sir A. W. Ward in his edition of Shirley's Royal Master, the same treatment has been accorded to that play. Neither The Royal Master nor Brome's Antipodes has been more than once before republished. They will, I think, be welcomed by the general reader, for the earlier editions are not always readily obtainable. The next volume of this series, now well under way, will present the comedy of the Restoration. In reading the proofs of plays in this volume I have been assisted by my colleague, Dr. G. A. Smithson; and I return my hearty thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Author : Richard Brome

Book excerpt: A Jovial Crew, or the Merry Beggars, is a comedy about four noble lovers who join the beggar community for a pastoral life of dance and song. Or is it? Whilst maintaining its unremitting good humour, A Jovial Crew shows that the literary depiction of beggar life, and real beggar life, are profoundly different. Daily aspects of life in the beggar world – poverty, dirt, licentiousness – come as a surprise to the well-born, who are ultimately led to question their own values. The last production mounted before theatres were closed for the English Civil War, A Jovial Crew's exploration of class, commonwealth, kinship and kingship shows an intense engagement with contemporary politics. This edition, with dedicated sections on music and language in the play, argues that A Jovial Crew also offers a nostalgic farewell to English theatre. It explores Brome's attitude to performance and print, and follows A Jovial Crew from its first, Caroline staging, to its later manifestations as a Restoration comedy, an eighteenth-century opera, and a twentieth-century proto-Marxist tragicomedy.

Book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 2 1660 1800

Download or read book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 2 1660 1800 written by George Watson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1971-07-02 with total page 1698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
