Christ thus is the primary representation of God as the ultimate reality of love. He is also the true image of God, and the model for how humans are also called to represent God in love. The human features of desire and vulnerability, as these express elements that shape, form, and articulate challenges for human life, present humans with the need for orienting themselves, and for different types of transformation. Christian religion articulates a specific mode of how to cope with these challenges presented by desire and vulnerability: by living in love. Against this backdrop, Henriksen argues that neither how one understands religion, God, nor how to live a life that relates to ultimacy, can be tasks fulfilled as long as history goes on.

Book excerpt: In this study, using a qualitative heuristic methodology, eight practicing Christians, four men and four women, over the age of forty five were interviewed in depth about their experience of their representations of and relationship with God, how those experiences have changed over time, and their experience of growing up in their family of origin to see if there is any correlation between their early family relationships and their images of God. the data indicates that the interviewees who identified as Roman Catholic exhibit more influence from the group representations of the Catholic tradition or Catholic imagination. Those who identified as more Protestant, tended to draw more of their images from the group images of the Bible, especially the New Testament. the two men who are monks and the one man who is a former Jesuit priest displayed some projection of internalized parental relationships onto the institutional church. All of the participants indicated that ultimately they reached a point in their relationships with God at which their images dissolve and God is experienced solely as a presence. Perhaps the most surprising result that emerged from these interviews was how little of the internalized parental object relationships of these people has been projected onto their God images. Rather, their representations, while showing traces of parental influences, seem to have emerged from a variety of other sources, especially the traditional images of Christianity. Directions for further research might include investigations into the images of and relationships with God of people in different age groups in order to identify developmental trends in the projection of early family relationships onto their God images. It would be useful to examine the God images of people from other religious traditions such as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism to discern if early family relationships have an impact on their representations of God.

Consequently barriers develop between disciplines that prevent the free flow of ideas and the collaborations that on Visual Representations could often bring success. VRI'98, a workshop focused & Interpretations, was intended to break down such barriers. The workshop was held in the Foresight Conference Centre, which occupies part of the former Liverpool Royal Infirmary, a Grade 2 listed building, which has been recently restored. The building combines a majestic architecture with the latest in new conference facilities and technologies and thus provided a very suitable setting for a workshop aimed at bringing the Arts and the Sciences together. of the workshop was to promote inter-disciplinary awareness across The main aim a range of disciplines where visual representations and interpretations are exploited. Contributions to the workshop were therefore invited from researchers who are actively investigating visual representations and interpretations: - artists, architects, biologists, chemists, clinicians, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, educationalists, engineers, graphic designers, linguists, mathematicians, philosophers, physicists, psychologists and social scientists.
