Mais déjà, des questions émergent quant à la volonté des femmes de continuer à utiliser la contraception médicalisée. Objectif : Identifier les représentations et les ressentis des femmes à propos de leur contraception, à l'heure actuelle. Matériels et Méthode : Étude qualitative portant sur 18 femmes en Limousin au cours d'entretiens semi-dirigés suivant un guide d'entretien prédéfini. Le recueil des données a été effectué jusqu'à saturation. Le codage descriptif, les analyses thématiques et matricielles ont été réalisés grâce au logiciel NVivo 12 Plus. Résultats : 18 femmes ont participé en entretiens semi-dirigés. 165 nœuds sont ressortis et ont été regroupés en 5 thèmes. Pour les femmes, la contraception représente : une liberté, une nécessité imposant des contraintes, une peur notamment des effets indésirables, une méfiance et un désir de naturel. Discussion : Pour être libres, les femmes ont besoin de maîtriser leur fécondité avec une contraception efficace. Mais cette liberté implique des contraintes majeures, notamment, une nécessité d'observance rigoureuse. Le dictat de la pilule perdure ainsi que le problème du choix contraceptif libre et éclairé. L'utilisation des contraceptifs pose la question des effets secondaires inhérents, avec une méfiance qui apparaît envers les hormones et le discours médical. Un désir de contraception plus “naturelle” est exprimé avec aussi un souhait de partage de la charge contraceptive avec les hommes. Conclusion : La contraception est une avancée majeure pour les femmes, devenue nécessité, mais à quelle échéance une contraception plus égalitaire et plus confortable ?

Greek and Latin authors leave no doubt that such images provided a centrepiece for religious and civic life and that vast sums were spent to producethem. A number of these statues were the creations of antiquity's most highly acclaimed artists: Polykleitos, Alkamenes, Leochares, and, of course, Pheidias, whose magnificent Zeus Olympios came to be ranked among the Seven Wonders of the World. Although a few individual images such as Pheidias'Athena Parthenos have been the subject of detailed scholarly analysis, chryselephantine statuary as a class, from the exquisite statuettes of Minoan Crete to the majestic temple images constructed by classical Greek city-states and imitated by the Romans, has not received comprehensive study since1815. This book presents not only the ancient literary and epigraphical evidence for lost statues and examines representations of them in other media, but also assembles and analyses much-neglected physical survivals, elucidating throughout the innovative techniques, such as ivory-bending, employedin their production as well as the variety of social, religious, and political roles they played within the ancient societies that produced them.

The small French town of Ainay-le-Ch�teau and its environs are the site of a "family colony" for men, established in 1900. Here the patients ("lodgers") live with ordinary families ("foster parents"), hold jobs, and are free to move about the countryside. Jodelet's chronicle of daily life in the colony is made rich and vivid by extensive ethnographic material as she unravels a complex set of relationships, ultimately finding that while some of the barriers between the "other" and the larger society have been overcome, new ones have arisen in their place. This unique social experiment provides invaluable social and cultural insights, illuminating many fundamental issues in psychology, psychiatry, and sociology.

She uses ethnography, interviews, statistics, historical and popular culture materials, and medical publications to produce a richly detailed account of Japanese women's lives. The result offers irrefutable evidence that the experience and meanings—even the endocrinological changes—associated with female midlife are far from universal. Rather, Lock argues, they are the product of an ongoing dialectic between culture and local biologies. Japanese focus on middle-aged women as family members, and particularly as caretakers of elderly relatives. They attach relatively little importance to the end of menstruation, seeing it as a natural part of the aging process and not a diseaselike state heralding physical decline and emotional instability. Even the symptoms of midlife are different: Japanese women report few hot flashes, for example, but complain frequently of stiff shoulders. Articulate, passionate, and carefully documented, Lock's study systematically undoes the many preconceptions about aging women in two distinct cultural settings. Because it is rooted in the everyday lives of Japanese women, it also provides an excellent entree to Japanese society as a whole. Aging and menopause are subjects that have been closeted behind our myths, fears, and misconceptions. Margaret Lock's cross-cultural perspective gives us a critical new lens through which to examine our assumptions.

During the 1960s, Quebec became radically secular, directly leading to its evolution as a welfare state with lay social services. What happened to cause this abrupt change? Genevieve Zubrzycki gives us an elegant and penetrating history, showing that a key incident sets up the transformation. Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of French Canadians, and, until 1969, was subject of annual celebrations with a parade in Montreal. That year, the statue of St. John was toppled by protestors, breaking off the head from the body. Here, then is the proximate cause: the beheading of a saint, a symbolic death to be sure, which caused the parades to disappear and other modes of national celebration to take their place. The beheading of the saint was part and parcel of the so-called Quiet Revolution, a period of far-reaching social, economic, political, and cultural transformations. Quebec society and the identity of its French-speaking members drastically reinvented themselves with the rejection of Catholicism. Zubrzycki is already acknowledged as a leading authority on nationalism and religion; this book will significantly enlarge her stature by showing the extent to which a core feature of the Quiet Revolution was an aesthetic revolt. A new generation rejected the symbols of French Canada, redefining national identity in the process (and as a process) and providing momentum for institutional reforms. We learn that symbols have causal force, generating chains of significations which can transform a Catholic-dominated conservative society into a leftist, forward-looking, secular society."
