The expense was borne entirely by the Lord Mayor, the City Corporation, and a few of the Lord Mayor's personal friends. The sum Of 15 IO was set aside for each artisan reporter; each had £2 handed to him as pocket-money on starting; there was allotted for railway travelling and for accommodation at a good hotel for the fortnight, £6: 5s., and this included bed, meat break fast, table d'hote dinner with wine, lights, and attendance. The balance Of £1 I 15s. The delegate received on presenting his report. Each delegate was insured against accident and injury during his stay. AS the reports came in they lproved'that the project had been carried through with very great Success. Wherever sketches could be introduced with advantage, the reports have been illustrated. They are not only published in volume. Form, which will serve as a valuable work of reference to all who are interested in labour and the position Of the worker generally, but each report is also issued in pamphlet form, thus placing them within the reach Of any workman whose trade has been represented. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
