Book excerpt: Crime: Local and Global and its sister text Criminal Justice: Local and Global are two new teaching texts that aim to equip the reader with a critical understanding of the globally contested nature of 'crime' and 'justice'. Through an examination of key concepts and criminological approaches, the books illuminate the different ways in which crime is constructed, conceived and controlled. International case studies are used to demonstrate how 'crime' and 'justice' are historically and geographically located in terms of the global/local context, and how processes of criminalisation and punishment are mediated in contemporary societies. Crime: Local and Global covers the way local events (such as prostitution) have wider aspects than previously thought. Links with people traffickers, international organised crime and violence cannot be ignored any longer. Each crime or area of activity selected within this text has a global reach, and is made ever more possible due to the way globalisation has opened up markets, both legitimate and illegitimate. The book's approach and scope emphasises that we can no longer view 'crime' as something which occurs within certain jurisdictions, at certain times and in particular places. For example, the chapter on cybercrime highlights the 'illegal' acts that can be perpetrated by second lifers, anywhere in the world, but are they a crime?

High school science teacher Asher Thompson only wanted to help. He told himself that the night he pulled Carly Dalton, a rain-soaked teenager, from the floor of the local truck stop bar. And now, with the girl's father dead and sister missing, he was doing it again, playing hero in a situation that was hitting too close to home. But when Carly's brutal present exposes a chink in Asher's armor, compelling him to confront his own painful past, he's forced to make an impossible choice...protect his student or save himself. And Asher already knows... NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED. *** Fractals is an emotionally intense psychological thriller that explores the impact of trauma on our perception of right versus wrong. Book Human Trafficking

Download or read book Human Trafficking written by Kathryn Cullen-DuPont and published by Infobase Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite the United Nations having officially abolished slavery and the slave trade more than 60 years ago, millions of human beings continue to be enslaved. Human trafficking - the official term for the modern-day slave trade - consists of buying and selling people with the intent of exploiting them through forced labor or sexual acts. Human Trafficking provides a thorough examination of this issue. It describes the suffering caused by human trafficking as well as the financial and cultural conditions that make modern slavery possible, both within and beyond national borders. The efforts of the United Nations, national governments, and nongovernmental organizations to combat human trafficking are thoroughly discussed, as are those to provide direct aid to the individual victims. Human Trafficking is an eye-opening account that examines how the trade is conducted in the United States, the Netherlands, Nigeria, India, and Belize. Each case study analyzes the patterns of trade, the types of exploitation, why countries have failed to halt the practice, and the unrelenting efforts to eradicate human trafficking"--Provided by publisher.

Book Combating Human Trafficking

Download or read book Combating Human Trafficking written by Christal Morehouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human trafficking is one of the most urgent political challenges of our global age. As the UN defines it, human trafficking is essentially a form of non-institutional slavery, but also includes the trafficking of human organs. It has been resistant to abolition and difficult to combat. Human trafficking is organized through networks and is clandestine in nature, making it very hard for governments to even detect. Yet it is arguably the most severe form of human exploitation in the world. Traffickers trade in the immediate human suffering of their ‘goods’. Human trafficking is a pressing political issue for two key reasons. First, because its victims are often subjected to virtual slavery, exposing them to severe physical and mental abuse. Their rights are brutally violated and they are robbed of their f- damental freedom and dignity. The severity and estimated scope of this abuse has made the issue a priority for the American and German governments. Second, - man trafficking is estimated to be one of the top three sources of income globally, for organized crime. Only trafficking in drugs and arms surpasses human trafficking as a means for such illegal networks to generate funds. Criminal networks undermine the integrity of democratic states and destabilize their social and economic order. - come generated from human trafficking provides such networks with the resources they need to sustain a wide range of harmful activities.
