Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Total Eclipse of the Sun, August 17-18, 1868, Vol. 37: As Observed at Guntoor, Under Instructions From the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for India For this purpose I called on Captain davis, Agent Of the Peninsular and Oriental Company, to enlist his services; and at his house was for tunate enough to meet an old companion, Major napier, Of the Royal Artillery. Both these gentlemen promised their aid; and I learnt from them that Colonel addison and Major weir, of h.m.'s 2nd Queen's Royal Regiment, would be likely to be valuable coadjutors. It being then too late to look them up, I asked Major napier to broach the subject, and promised to write as soon as I could. This I did, and it will save time if I say at once what my recommendations were. Ist. I recommended that they Should endeavour to make drawings Of the corona and appendages as accurately as possible, and urged that, if two Observers were available, two sketches, made independently Of the same part (say a quadrant) would be more valuable than single sketches of large portions which could not confirm and interpret each other. 2nd. I undertook to send, if wanted, a polariscope, and I did accordingly send one on savart's principle, with instructions which I thought would be sufficient for its use. 3rd. I suggested that Colonel addison should address Mr. Huggins as to getting a spectroscope for hand use, which he did with a favourable result. I hope, therefore, that there will be some results from Colonel addison's Observations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: James Francis Tennant's book is a detailed scientific report on the total eclipse of the sun in 1868. The report includes observations made at the Guntoor observatory in India, and provides valuable insights into the phenomena of solar eclipses. Tennant's writing is clear and informative, and his research is meticulous. Book The Story of Helium and the Birth of Astrophysics

Download or read book The Story of Helium and the Birth of Astrophysics written by Biman B. Nath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if one of the most thrilling stories in the history of science turned out to be wrong? Can urban legends creep into the hallowed grounds of scientific history? As incredible as it may sound, the story of one of the most important elements in modern times – helium - has been often misrepresented in books, encyclopedias, and online sources, despite the fact that archival materials tell a different story. Open the entry for Helium in any encyclopaedia and you will read a false story that has been repeated over the years. ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica’, for example, says that helium was discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Janssen while observing a total solar eclipse from India in 1868. Apparently he noticed something new in the spectrum of the sun, which he thought was the signature of an undiscovered element. The truth is that Janssen never saw any sign of a new element during his observations in India. His reports and letters do not mention any such claim. Other sources would have you believe that helium was jointly discovered by Janssen and Norman Lockyer, a British scientist, and that their discovery letters reached Paris the same day, one sent from India, and the other from England. Again, the truth is completely different. Two letters from Lockyer and Janssen did reach Paris the same day in 1868, but their letters did not mention any new element. What they had discovered was a new way of observing the Sun without a solar eclipse. This would ultimately lead to the discovery of helium, in which Lockyer would play a prominent role, but not Janssen. At the same time, Norman Robert Pogson, a disgruntled British astronomer stationed in India did notice something peculiar during the eclipse. He was the first one to notice something odd about the spectrum of the Sun that day, and his observations would prove crucial to Lockyer’s own investigations of helium. But Pogson’s report was never published in any peer reviewed journal and it languished on the desk of a local British officer in colonial India. This book tells the real story behind the discovery of helium, along with biographical sketches of the scientists and descriptions of the milieu in which they worked. It will convey the excitement, confusion, and passion of nineteenth century scientists, using their own words, from their letters and reports. “The Story of Helium and the Birth of Astrophysics” chronicles one of the most exciting discoveries ever made and explains why it also marked the birth of a new branch of science called ‘astrophysics.’

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of Observations of the Total Eclipse of the Sun, August 7, 1869 Sir: In response to recommendations In my annual report in October, 1868, and the representations of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Boston, the American Philosophical Society and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and of others interested in the promotion of science, Congress appropriated for observations of the eclipse 'of the sun in August, 1869, under the direction of the superintendent of the Nautical Almanac. The appropriation was desired for defraying expenses of observers, of moving instruments of sufficient power to the line of central eclipse, and of preparing for abun dant photographic records and spectroscopic observations. Book Astronomy in India 1784 1876

Download or read book Astronomy in India 1784 1876 written by Joydeep Sen and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian scientific achievements in the early twentieth century are well known, with a number of heralded individuals making globally recognized strides in the field of astrophysics. Covering the period from the foundation of the Asiatick Society in 1784 to the establishment of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in 1876, Sen explores the relationship between Indian astronomers and the colonial British. He shows that from the mid-nineteenth century, Indians were not passive receivers of European knowledge, but active participants in modern scientific observational astronomy.
