Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Laws are forever present and provide the pathways for all Australians to truly learn how to belong to this continent.' - June Oscar 'No other current work has been able to so comprehensively explain the significance of traditional law in all its manifestations.' - Henry Reynolds Law is culture, and culture is law. Given by the ancestors and cultivated over millennia, Indigenous law defines what it is to be human. Complex and evolving, law holds the keys to resilient, caring communities and a life in balance with nature. Marcia Langton and Aaron Corn show how Indigenous law has enabled people to survive and thrive in Australia for more than 2000 generations. Nurturing people and places, law is the foundation of all Indigenous societies in Australia, giving them the tools to respond and adapt to major environmental and social changes. But law is not a thing of the past. These living, sophisticated systems are as powerful now as they have ever been, if not more so. Law: The Way of the Ancestors challenges readers to consider how Indigenous law can inspire new ways forward for us all in the face of global crises.

Book An Australian Casebook of Study Centres in Distance Education

Download or read book An Australian Casebook of Study Centres in Distance Education written by Angela S. Castro and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of contemporary issues in Australian study centers for distance education students introduces six case studies which show how some institutions in Australia have endeavored to set up study centers or "borrow" existing local facilities to provide a measure of support for their students. Attempts to set up a telecommunications network at some centers for staff and student interaction are also described, as well as approaches which stress more direct interaction between teaching staff and students. There are two emerging patterns in the provision of study center facilities: (1) the willingness and effort of some institutions to pool resources or to share with others, and (2) the increasing difficulty of funding study centers. An abstract is provided for each of the studies, and a selected, annotated bibliography lists materials on study centers and their functions, and on applications of new technology in student support. Book Countering Modernity

Download or read book Countering Modernity written by Carolyn Smith-Morris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights and examines how Indigenous Peoples continue to inhabit the world in counter-modern ways. It illustrates how communalist practices and cooperative priorities of many Indigenous communities are simultaneously key to their cultural survival while being most vulnerable to post-colonial erasure. Chapters contributed by community collectives, elders, lawyers, scholars, multi-generational collaboratives, and others are brought together to highlight the communal and cooperative strategies that counter the modernizing tropes of capitalist, industrialist, and representational hegemonies. Furthermore, the authors of the book explicitly interrogate the roles of witness, collaborator, advocate, and community leader as they consider ethical relations in contexts of financialized global markets, ongoing land grabbing and displacement, epistemic violence, and post-colonial erasures. Lucid and topical, the book will be indispensable for students and scholars of anthropology, modernity, capitalism, history, sociology, human rights, minority studies, Indigenous studies, Asian studies, and Latin American studies.

Book Vocational Education and Training

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training written by Don Zoellner and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first consolidated history of vocational education and training in the Northern Territory. Not only does the story present a chronological account of events, people and institutions, it also offers an explanation of how the system actually works and this has application well beyond the Territory. The mix of historical accounting and operational analysis comes from a unique perspective. It is proposed that the best way to understand the behaviour of the government ministers who have responsibility for vocational training is to compare their decisions and actions with those of wealthy philanthropists.
