Section 2 of the progress report reproduces or summarizes key information on the challenges the species is facing, the population goal for achieving its recovery, approaches for meeting this goal, and performance measures to gauge the progress of recovery. For more detail, readers should refer back to the Recovery Strategy. Section 3 reports the progress of activities identified in the Recovery Strategy supporting the recovery goal and objectives. Book excerpt: "This Progress Report describes the progress made from 2009 to 2014 toward meeting the recovery objectives listed in the Recovery Strategy for the North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) in Canadian Waters (hereafter "Recovery Strategy). This report is one in a series of documents for this species that are linked and should be considered together, including a recovery potential assessment (DFO 2007), the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) status report (COSEWIC 2013), a Recovery Strategy (DFO 2014a), and any future Action Plans. Section 2 reproduces the COSEWIC assessment summary, recaps the threats to the population and its critical habitat, along with the recovery objectives, performance indicators, and the critical habitat schedule of studies from the Recovery Strategy. During the reporting period, many activities were undertaken to support the recovery objectives. These activities, along with an assessment of recovery progress according to the performance indicators, are presented in Section 3. Section 4 provides a concluding statement about the implementation of the Recovery Strategy during the reporting period, as well as suggestions to guide future recovery efforts"--Intro.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Offshore Killer Whales face both anthropogenic and natural threats, limitations or vulnerabilities, including: reductions in prey availability; contaminant exposure from prey; spills of substances harmful to the marine environment; acute and chronic acoustic disturbance; physical disturbance; interactions with commercial fisheries and aquaculture; direct killing; climate change; disease agents; fixed dietary preferences and natural decreases in prey supply; inbreeding depression; tooth wear; and mass stranding or natural entrapment. The small population size and typically large groupings of Offshores makes the population particularly vulnerable to stochastic events"--Executive summary, p. iii.

Book Action Plan for the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whale Orcinus Orca in Canada

Download or read book Action Plan for the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whale Orcinus Orca in Canada written by Sheila J. Thornton and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) were listed as Threatened and Endangered, respectively, under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) in 2003. This Action Plan is considered one in a series of documents that are linked and should be taken into consideration together, including the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) status report, a recovery potential assessment, and the Recovery Strategy. Principal among the anthropogenic threats to recovery are reductions in the availability or quality of prey, environmental contamination, and both physical and acoustic disturbance. As these threats are common to all three ecotypes, the measures identified in the Resident Killer Whale Action Plan are highly likely to benefit Transient (Bigg's) and Offshore Killer Whale populations that frequent Canadian Pacific waters. This Action Plan outlines measures that provide the best chance of achieving the population and distribution objectives for the species, including the measures to be taken to address the threats and monitor the recovery of the species. The recovery strategy defined the population and distribution objective for the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whale as: Ensure the long-term viability of Resident Killer Whale populations by achieving and maintaining demographic conditions that preserve their reproductive potential, genetic variation, and cultural continuity"--Executive summary, p. iii.
