Download or read book Report on the Prevention of Malaria in Mauritius Classic Reprint written by Ronald Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Prevention of Malaria in Mauritius The Middle Ages added little to our knowledge of the subject. In 1640, however, the specific remedy for the disease, the so-called Cinchona or Peruvian Bark, began to be known in Europe; and in 1820 Pelletier and Caventou extracted from this substance its essential principle, quinine. The extensive use of the drug made by physicians ultimately showed that it does not cure all fevers, but only those which possess the so-called intermittent tendency - that is, the tendency to a succession of attacks at regular periods. This fact enabled them to separate these fevers clearly from the others, known as the Continued Fevers. It is true that the Intermittent Fevers may become continued at times; but, as Torti Showed in 1712, this is merely due to the overlapping of the successive attacks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prevention of Malaria An historical introduction is always necessary to give coherence to ideas; and I have taken the opportunity to write as complete and accurate a one as my space and knowledge permit of. The summary of facts which follows (taken from my report on Mauritius) may be useful in propagandism; the experimental inoculations of men by means of blood drawn from patients or of infected Anophelines have been collected with care because of their fundamental importance in the modern theory of malaria;-and I trust that these three first chapters will suffice to convince the busy layman that this theory has been based upon something more than mere conjecture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, low-cost antimalarial drugs silently saved millions of lives and cured billions of debilitating infections. Today, however, these drugs no longer work against the deadliest form of malaria that exists throughout the world. Malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africaâ€"currently just over one million per yearâ€"are rising because of increased resistance to the old, inexpensive drugs. Although effective new drugs called "artemisinins" are available, they are unaffordable for the majority of the affected population, even at a cost of one dollar per course. Saving Lives, Buying Time: Economics of Malaria Drugs in an Age of Resistance examines the history of malaria treatments, provides an overview of the current drug crisis, and offers recommendations on maximizing access to and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs. The book finds that most people in endemic countries will not have access to currently effective combination treatments, which should include an artemisinin, without financing from the global community. Without funding for effective treatment, malaria mortality could double over the next 10 to 20 years and transmission will intensify.

Book World Development Report 2009

Download or read book World Development Report 2009 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.
