Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Poultry Industry in America But there are branches which, in spite of less favourable conditions, American poultry-keepers have gone beyond us. How far their methods can be adopted by us is indicated in the recommendations given at the end of the Report. Acknowledgments - It would be impossible to acknowledge adequately the help and courtesies extended to me during the course Of my enquiry, for at every place visited I found not only the greatest readiness to afford me information, but an earnest desire to make my journey both pleasant and profitable. Had I accepted the numerous invitations to extend my enquiries, it would have needed as many months as I was able to give weeks to the work. I may, however, express my special thanks to the Hon. James Wilson, us. Secretary Of State for Agriculture at Washington, and the Hon. Sydney Fisher, m.p., Canadian Minister of Agriculture at Ottawa, for the great help and assistance rendered to me. I am indebted to Mr. J. H. Robinson, Editor Of Farm Poultry, Boston, Mass, for the photographs from which Plates I. And III. To VIII. Are reproduced, and to Prof. C. K. Graham, of Storrs Agricultural College, Conn, for that represented by Plate II. I have the honour to remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry Industry of the United States of America: A Special Report Supplementing the Exhibit of the United States Department of Agriculture at the Fourth World's Poultry Congress, London, 1930 The poultry industry of the United States is a widely distributed and diversified activity. Poultry products are more universally produced than any other agricultural product. Over one-third of the total poultry population of the world is to be found in the United States, there being about five fowls raised annually for every person, which is a much higher proportion than in most other countries. There are very few farms that do not have a small flock of poultry, and thousands of small flocks are kept in the small yards of homes in towns and villages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists have described the upcountry Georgia poultry industry as the quintessential agribusiness. Following a trajectory from Reconstruction through the Great Depression to the present day, Monica R. Gisolfi shows how the poultry farming model of semivertical integration perfected a number of practices that had first underpinned the cotton-growing crop-lien system, ultimately transforming the poultry industry in ways that drove tens of thousands of farmers off the land and rendered those who remained dependent on large agribusiness firms. Gisolfi argues that the inequalities inherent in the structure of modern poultry farming have led to steep human and environmental costs. Agribusiness firms—many of them descended from the cotton-era South’s furnishing merchants—brought farmers into a system of feed-conversion contracts that placed all production decisions in the hands of the poultry corporations but at least half of the capital risks on the farmers. Along the way, the federal government aided and abetted—sometimes unwittingly—the consolidation of power by poultry firms through direct and indirect subsidies and favorable policies. Drawing on USDA files, oral history, congressional records, and poultry publications, Gisolfi puts a local face on one of the twentieth century’s silent agribusiness revolutions.

Book excerpt: SLAUGHTERHOUSE BLUES: THE MEAT AND POULTRY INDUSTRY IN NORTH AMERICA draws on more than 15 years of research by the authors, a cultural anthropologist and a social geographer, to present a detailed look at the meat and poultry industry in the United States and Canada. Following chapters on today's beef, poultry, and pork industries, SLAUGHTERHOUSE BLUES examines industry impacts on workers and on the communities that host its plants. The book details the authors' efforts to help communities plan for and mitigate the negative consequences of meat and poultry plants as well as community opposition to confined animal feeding operations. The book concludes by exploring alternatives to North America's model of industrialized meat production.
