The mean annual rainfall of the Colorado Desert in the Desert Region of Southern California is about 3 inches, which is not sufficient in amount to make a grazing area of this desert. The Cocupa Desert in the Desert Region of La Frontera, on the other hand, has sufficient rain at times to make it a fair grazing area, while the San Felipe Desert, which is still farther south. has sufficient rainfall to make it a good grazing area. The character of the vegetation in the San Felipe Desert is such that this desert presumably has a mean annual rainfall of at least 10 inches. Altitude as Affecting Mean Annual Rainfall in the Coast Region of La Frontera: The section entitled "Altitude as Affecting Mean Annual Rainfall" on page 94 of the writer's Report on Southern California gives an extended discussion of the effect of increasing altitude'on the mean annual rainfall. and the conclusion is reached that the average increase in the mean annual rainfall in the Coast Region of Southern California is 0.5 inch for each 100 feet of increased elevation. Although no rainfall records have been kept at the higher elevations in the Coast Region of La Frontera, which could be of assistance in ascertaining whether this law holds good there also, yet it is apparent from the nature of the vegeta tion growing at the higher elevations there, that this rule holds good, or approximately so, in the Coast Region of La Frontera as well as in the Coast Region of Southern California.
