This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology and Agriculture of the State of Mississippi, 1860 It is very commonly and cheaply charged upon professional men generally, and upon those cultivating the exact sciences in partic ular, that they have a perverse disposition to wrap up everything known in an unintelligible, technical jargon, or big words, as they are currently termed. It is expected of them that they should develop new ideas (such as always result from the special study of any subject), but that they should use no new terms in expressing or communicating them which is simply impossible. N 0 one can expect to be taught, without learning let him catch the idea, and it will matter little to him whether the word expressing the same be Greek, Latin, or Chinese; English terms, already possessing definite meaning, cannot be used to express new ideas. If he cannot take the time, or trouble, to learn the idea, he ought not to complain if he cannot understand the term. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology of South Carolina, 1848 Geology, Mineralogy and Chemistry, have boon long recognized in their relation to Mining, Metallurgy, and some other of the useful arts, but it is comparatively of recent date that these sciences have been applied, systematically and extensively, to the advancement of agriculture and the arts of civilization. Men there were, it is true, who cultivated these sciences, and whose labors were published for the public good - the journals and transactions of associations for the promotion of science, have furnished those, to whom they were accessible, a vast amount of information applicable to the common affairs of life. But little more than twenty years have elapsed since the first attempt was made by any Government to cause a systematic Geological Survey to be made by competent persons, for the purpose of collecting into a body, for the express use of the people, a correct knowledge of the facts derived from science, in relation to the resources of the territory which they inhabit. North Carolina has the merit of having commenced the work; and, in 1841, a Report upon the Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina, made by order of the Legislature, was presented by Mr. Lardner Vaeuxem. Since that time, the example of these States has been followed by nearly all the others, so that we have now embodied, in a series of reports, a mass of information on the Geology and industorial resources of the United States, as gratifying to the friends of science as it is useful to the people at large. The Survey, of which the result is contained in the following pages, is due to a movement altogether agricultural. A survey of the State had been long and ably advocated by the late R. W. Roper, Esq. Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture; and, in 1842, an Agricultural Survey of the State was ordered by the Legislature, and Edmund Ruffin, Esq. of Virginia, whose name and writings are identified with the agriculture of the country, was called to conduct the survey, by Gov. Hammond. After a year of arduous labor, in the development of the agricultural resources of the State, the result of which is found in his excellent report, Mr. Ruffin resigned, and I had the honor of receiving a commission from Gov. Hammond, to succeed him in conducting the survey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soils and Agriculture of the Southern States It was the original intention to limit the area discussed in this volume to the region known as the Cotton Belt. As the work progressed, a number of reasons occurred for increasing the size of the territory included. The soils of the Cotton Belt do not stop at the northern limit of cotton production, but they extend far north of that line. The type of agriculture practiced in the Cotton Belt grades into that practiced in the region to the north without any sharp regional division line. The eastern tobacco belt extends far down into the Cotton Belt, corn is grown through almost the whole of the Belt, as well as in the region to the north, and other staple crops of the more northerly regions are, also, staple crops in many parts of the South. Book Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties

Download or read book Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties written by Frederick J. H. Merrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties: December, 1914 The county of San Diego and its former eastern extension, now known as Imperial County, comprise a section of southern California unique in climate, mineral resources and agricultural possibilities. The first of these subjects has become familiar to the tourist and health seeker and has had an important influence in building up the city of San Diego and the population of the surrounding country. The second, to which this report is devoted, is of great interest for its variety, and will be, in the future, as it has been in the past, a matter of substantial financial importance. The agricultural conditions are so inviting that they have attracted world-wide attention and have been so attentively considered that they need not be described in detail here. The following report presents the result of nearly three months of field work in the two counties. In this limited time it was not possible to visit every locality, but, by combining the writer's personal observa tions on the principal properties with other data from reliable sources, all deposits, of any importance or interest, have received attention and are accurately recorded. In discussing the resources of these two counties, it seems advisable to treat them in two separate chapters, though their union prior to 1907 and their intimate relation in geography and geology, make it necessary to refer frequently from one to the other. Articles on the geology and mineral resources of San Diego County, together with Imperial County, are to be found in many of the publications of the State Mining Bureau, and to them the reader is referred for a large amount of historic detail. Reference to these will be found in the bibliography at the end of this report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Geology of the County of Cape May State of New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology of the County of Cape May State of New Jersey Classic Reprint written by New Jersey Geological Survey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the County of Cape May, State of New Jersey The agricultural resources of the county, and the means for their development, have been prominent subjects of study; and, in this respect, I feel confident that the results will be valuable to the State, and will justify the enlight ened policy which originated and has sustained the survey. From the location of the County of Cape May, remote from the great lines of travel, it has heretofore been but little known in other parts of the State; and, on account of its distance from market, its agriculture has not been much developed. Its climate is delightful; it has a soil which yields generous returns to the cultivator; and its resources for fertilizers are almost unequaled. It is sus ceptible of a high degree of agricultural improvement, and is now rapidly advancing. Within the last six years the quantity of its staple agricultural products has increased fifty per cent., and the price of land has doubled. When the railroads now in process of construction are Opened through this county, and proper facilities for marketing are afforded, the Whole area of Cape May will be desirable ground for farmers and market gardeners. Accompanying the Report is the elaborate and beauti fully executed map of the county, by Lieut. E. L. Viele, State Topographical Engineer. The importance of this map for exhibiting the geography and topography, as well as the geology of the county, must commend it to the approval of every one. I have colored it in accordance with the geological descriptions given in the Report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Geology and Mineral Resources of Mississippi

Download or read book Geology and Mineral Resources of Mississippi written by Albert Forster Crider and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of Mississippi The following sketch of the geology and mineral resources of the State of Mississippi has been prepared to serve as a summary of present knowledge of those subjects. Much detailed field work in the State will be required before any complete discussion of its geology can be presented, but it is hoped that the outline given here will be of service, particularly in indicating the lines along which the development of Mississippi's mineral resources will probably take place. It is with pleasure that, this opportunity is taken of acknowledging indebtedness to previous workers in the same field. In the preparation of the present sketch free use has been made of the various reports and papers published by Dr. Eugene Hilgard, former State geologist. Dr. Eugene A. Smith, formerly assistant to Doctor Hilgard and now State geologist of Alabama, has very generously furnished notes on various phases of Mississippi geology. Mr. L. C. Johnson, of Pachuta, Miss., who has spent many years in geologic work in the State, has also contributed numerous data. In a paper recently published in the Transactions of the Mississippi Historical Society, Doctor Hilgard has given an outline of the principal events in the history of the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the State of Mississippi, from its formation in 1850 to its untimely cutting off in 1872. A summary of this valuable outline is as follows: The Geological and Agricultural Survey of the State of Mississippi had its origin in an act of the legislature entitled An act to further endow the University of Mississippi, which was approved by the governor March 5, 1850, and took effect June 1 following. This act provided that$3, 000 should be semiannually appropriated for the support of the agricultural and geologic departments of the university, at least one-half of which sum was to be expended in making a general geologic and agricultural survey of the State. Annual reports were to be made to the governor by the trustees of the university. This act, together with later legislation in 1852, 1854, and 1860, was the basis of all geologic work carried on by the State. In 1852, Prof. B. L. C. Wailes took up active work under the act of 1850, and in 1854 an appropriation for the publication of his report was made by the legislature. Professor Wailes was succeeded as State geologist in 1854 by Prof. Lewis Harper, and in 1857 another report was published. Both of these reports, particularly that of Professor Wailes, contain matter of much geologic and agricultural interest; but they are far inferior to the third report, published in 1860 by Dr. Eugene Hilgard, then State geologist. This is still the best available book on the geology of the State of Mississippi. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
