Download or read book The Great Trees of New Brunswick 2nd Edition written by David Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Atlantic Bestseller New Brunswick is home to more than five billion trees, many native to the Acadian forest and some exotics introduced by settlers. For this new edition of The Great Trees of New Brunswick (the first edition was published in 1987), forester David Palmer and conservationist Tracy Glynn have prepared a book that doubles as an informative guide to the province's native and introduced species and a compendium of "champion" trees, drawn from nominations from all corners of the province. Divided into sections on hardwoods, softwoods, and exotics and lavishly illustrated with full-colour photographs, The Great Trees of New Brunswick features chapters on all thirty-two native species and nine introduced species. Each chapter includes information on the tree's defining features, habitat and uses, as well as photographs and a detailed description of champion trees. Rounding out the book is an introductory essay on the Acadian forest -- its history, survival, and future. Whether you're an avid hiker, outdoors person, or simply someone who wants to know more about the trees of the Acadian forest, you'll find The Great Trees of New Brunswick to be an essential reference to New Brunswick's forests and its panoply of trees. Co-published with the Conservation Council of New Brunswick

Book Distribution of biomass and nutrients in some New Brunswick forest stands

Download or read book Distribution of biomass and nutrients in some New Brunswick forest stands written by Salim Mohamed Salim Maliondo and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Forestry Canada, Maritimes Region = Forêts Canada, Région des Maritimes. This book was released on 1990 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whole-tree harvesting (the removal of all above-stump tree components from the logging site, also referred to as intensive harvesting) is an increasingly common practice in the Maritimes, but there is little quantitative information on its effects on long-term site productivity. This study reports on biomass and nutrient content in both above-ground components and forest floors of 25 forest stands in N.B. These stands comprise 8 commercially important tree species growing naturally in different parts of the province. As the effects of tree harvesting on site productivity may be site specific, stands of each species were sampled on different site qualities as estimated in the field. The data reported constitute part of a larger study.

Download or read book The Miramichi Fire written by Alan MacEachern and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 7 October 1825, a massive forest fire swept through northeastern New Brunswick, devastating entire communities. When the smoke cleared, it was estimated that the fire had burned across six thousand square miles, one-fifth of the colony. The Miramichi Fire was the largest wildfire ever to occur within the British Empire, one of the largest in North American history, and the largest along the eastern seaboard. Yet despite the international attention and relief efforts it generated, and the ruin it left behind, the fire all but disappeared from public memory by the twentieth century. A masterwork in historical imagination, The Miramichi Fire vividly reconstructs nineteenth-century Canada's greatest natural disaster, meditating on how it was lost to history. First and foremost an environmental history, the book examines the fire in the context of the changing relationships between humans and nature in colonial British North America and New England, while also exploring social memory and the question of how history becomes established, warped, and forgotten. Alan MacEachern explains how the imprecise and conflicting early reports of the fire's range, along with the quick rebound of the forests and economy of New Brunswick, led commentators to believe by the early 1900s that the fire's destruction had been greatly exaggerated. As an exercise in digital history, this book takes advantage of the proliferation of online tools and sources in the twenty-first century to posit an entirely new reading of the past. Resurrecting one of Canada's most famous and yet unexamined natural disasters, The Miramichi Fire traverses a wide range of historical and scientific literatures to bring a more complete story into the light.

Book Forests for the Future

Download or read book Forests for the Future written by Paul Wolvekamp and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at policy-makers and practitioners, this work looks at how local and indigenous communities can maintain the balance between their societies and their forest environments when faced with increasing external pressures, rising populations and growing demands for basic needs and cash. While efforts by governments or coporations to restore and manage forest environments are often non-existent or ineffective, there frequently exists, within communities who depend on forests, a wealth of knowledge about rational land use and environmental protection.
