Book The Effects of Dredging on the Chemical Characteristics of the Grand River

Download or read book The Effects of Dredging on the Chemical Characteristics of the Grand River written by Brian J. Eadie and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During spring 1977, water was sampled in the Grand River, which runs through the State of Michigan, to estimate the increased loads of polluting and enriching substances caused by dredging the river channel near its mouth at Lake Michigan. Results indicate that sedimentary material disturbed during the dredging process is carries out to the lake. On an annual basis, the increase in loading is approximately 1 percent for all variables measured; however, during the period of dredging (about 1 week), the increases are approximately 30 percent. The effects of these events on the nearshore ecology are not known at present.

Book Historical Trends in Pollutant Loadings to Lake Erie

Download or read book Historical Trends in Pollutant Loadings to Lake Erie written by Robert Proctor Apmann and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates historical trends in pollutant loadings to Lake Erie. The first of two sections of this report analyzes information on the amount of sediments delivered to Lake Erie and discusses historical trends in sediment yield. There are two primary sources of data: (1) measurements of suspended sediment load made in some of the tributary rivers and (2) analyses of shoreline erosion and sedimentation rates in Lake Erie. These lead to a subsequent analysis of the sediment budget. Since the loading of contaminants to the lake is manifested by sedimentation, results are presented of analyses of contamination inputs from bottom coring. Trends in precipitation, runoff, and lake levels have been analyzed and are presented followed by the calculation and tabulation of the average surface water runoff to Lake Erie. The second section of the report deals primarily with the sources and inputs of the two nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen, to Lake Erie. There is little specific information on those inputs, and, therefore, information has been assembled from other locations on the sources of these nutrients. The historical growth in population in the Lake Erie Basin has also been traced.

Book Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling

Download or read book Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling written by Alena Mudroch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little attention has been paid to the techniques for aquatic sediment sampling in the scientific literature dealing with environmental issues. With increasing interest in aquatic sediments as a sink source of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, it has been recognized that sediment sampling is a complex and poorly documented discipline. No standardized methods exist to preserve the integrity of sediment and, particularly, sediment pore water, during sampling for different analyses and biological testing for assessment of sediment quality. A practical guide presenting the various methods available would prove extremely valuable. This is that guide. The book begins with a description of the objectives of sediment sampling for different purposes and planning of sampling programs. Most commonly used and readily available samplers and sampling techniques are explained for routine monitoring of sediment contamination and studies of sediment quality. Sample handling, transport, and storage are outlined relevant to the subsequent use of the collected sediments in physico-chemical analysis and biological testing. Measurements and notes of observations in the field during collection of sediments are described. Methods and equipment for collection of sediment pore water are detailed, and the efficiency, cost, and safety involved in sediment sampling are considered. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains examples, figures, and tables to enhance the reader's understanding of the material and of the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs. For each topic, recent citations are included from specialized literature. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains many examples, figures, and tables which will help the reader to understand the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs, and will provide a guide to preparation and execution of such programs.

Book Long term Impact of Dredged Material at Two Open water Sites

Download or read book Long term Impact of Dredged Material at Two Open water Sites written by Henry E. Tatem and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lake Erie study area included two control and three disposal sites, sampled once in 1979. Disposal sites contained more gravel and sand compared to control areas. Numerous macrofaunal and meiofaunal animals were found at all of the sites. In general, control sites contained more macrofaunal animals and species while the disposal sites were richer in meiofaunal. Substrate type and variety, which was influence by the disposal events, determined which animals were found where. None of the sites were devoid of animals and there was no indication that sediment contaminants affected benthic communities at the disposal sites. There were no difference in mercury or cadmium concentrations in sediment samples from the various sites. Samples taken at the Elliot Bay disposal site revealed that the disposal mound, created in 1975-1976, was still present and had stabilized physically and chemically. The mound area contained more animals that the surrounding bottom areas. Bivalves and polychaetes were the dominant animals than the surrounding disposal site. The numbers of these animals at the site increased from 1976 to 1979-1980. Sediment at the center of the disposal site contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB); however, other areas of Elliot Bay, removed from the dredges material mound, also contained PCB at concentrations similar to those observed at the site. Some animals taken from the disposal mound contained PCB at levels slilghtly higher than sediment levels which were in the 2.0- to 3.0-ppm range.

Book Long Term Impact of Dredged Material Disposal in Lake Erie Off Ashtabula Ohio

Download or read book Long Term Impact of Dredged Material Disposal in Lake Erie Off Ashtabula Ohio written by Kenneth J. Salamon and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material dredged from Ashtabula Harbor and River in 1975 and 1976 was placed at three Lake Erie disposal sites. The disposal operations were studied during the Dredged Material Research Program, 1973-1978. This report discusses animal, sediment, and water samples obtained from the three disposal sites and two nearby reference areas in 1979. Sediment characteristics, benthic animals, and mercury and cadmium levels were studied. Disposal sites contained more gravel and sand than the reference sites which were predominantly silt (58 per cent) and clay (33 percent). Disposal areas contained approximately 26 percent sand compared to 9 percent for the reference areas. A number of large (macrofauna) and small (meiofauna) benthic animals were found at both disposal and reference areas. In general, more macrofaunal animals and a greater variety of species were found at the reference areas. Sediment analyses showed the reference or control areas contained higher levels of mercury (0.9 microgram) compared to the disposal areas (0.7 microgram). For cadmium, the opposite was true. There were higher cadmium levels at the disposal areas. The differences were not statistically significant. Data obtained in 1979 are discussed in relation to the earlier studies conducted in 1975 and 1976.
