Book Policy Implications on Environment

Download or read book Policy Implications on Environment written by I. S. Kikula and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional methods of land management through rapid change in the name of "development" have led to land degradation. Resettlement during villagisation increased the human and livestock population. The concentration of this increased population into nucleated settlements and the rigid so-called "land-use plans" meant a complete disruption of the traditional land management system. This study points towards the need for educational and awareness programs to go along with policies which have environmental implications.

Download or read book Wielding the Ax written by Thaddeus Sunseri and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests have been at the fault lines of contact between African peasant communities in the Tanzanian coastal hinterland and outsiders for almost two centuries. In recent decades, a global call for biodiversity preservation has been the main challenge to Tanzanians and their forests. Thaddeus Sunseri uses the lens of forest history to explore some of the most profound transformations in Tanzania from the nineteenth century to the present. He explores anticolonial rebellions, the world wars, the depression, the Cold War, oil shocks, and nationalism through their intersections with and impacts on Tanzania’s coastal forests and woodlands. In Wielding the Ax, forest history becomes a microcosm of the origins, nature, and demise of colonial rule in East Africa and of the first fitful decades of independence. Wielding the Ax is a story of changing constellations of power over forests, beginning with African chiefs and forest spirits, both known as “ax–wielders,” and ending with international conservation experts who wield scientific knowledge as a means to controlling forest access. The modern international concern over tropical deforestation cannot be understood without an awareness of the long–term history of these forest struggles.

  • Author : Barbu Niculescu
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Download or read book Colonial Planning written by Barbu Niculescu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial Planning (1958) breaks new ground in its study of colonial development plans on a comparative basis. It starts with a summary of the statistical data for the 70 odd territories studied, including territorial incomes, capital accumulation, origin and size of planning finances and metropolitan contributions, both within and outside the plans. This section also discusses the validity and comparability of the data. The author then selects, with the help of the many contributions to the study of the problems of economic growth, those problems which seem especially relevant to administrative planning. After an outline of the historical developments which have led to the widespread acceptance of colonial planning in its then-current forms, he analyses the various types of planning machinery established both in the metropolitan centres and in the territories, traces their connections and attempts a classification of their organisational problems. Finally, he analyses and classifies the plans themselves, giving special attention to attempts at solving the problems of priorities. This work is based on administrative documents, and especially on the various colonial development plans put forward since the war: colonial development planning so far has been mainly an administrative exercise and its problems, methods, scope and aims can be best understood if studies within an administrative context.
