Book excerpt: Precision measurements of electroweak quantities are carried out to test the Standard Model (SM). In particular, measurements of the top quark mass, m{sub top}, when combined with precise measurements of the W mass, M{sub W}, and the weak mixing angle, sin2 {bar {theta}}{sub W}, make it possible to derive indirect constraints on the Higgs boson mass, M{sub H}, via top quark and Higgs boson electroweak radiative corrections to M{sub W}. Comparison of these constraints on M{sub H} with the mass obtained from direct observation of the Higgs boson in future collider experiments will be an important test of the SM. In this report, the prospects for measuring the W parameters (mass and width) and the weak mixing angle in Run II are discussed, and a program for extracting the probability distribution function of M{sub H} is described.

Book Future Of High Energy Physics The Some Aspects

Download or read book Future Of High Energy Physics The Some Aspects written by Luis Roberto Flores Castillo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monumental discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC marked the beginning of a new era in the high energy physics. Although the particle spectrum of the Standard Model is now complete with the Higgs boson, the hierarchy problem and the lack of explanation of the origin of dark matter imply that a new Beyond the Standard Model physics should exist. There is however no clear indication (experimental or otherwise) of the energy scale at which this new physics should appear. Current results from the LHC experiments have shown no unpredicted effects up to pp collision energies of 13 TeV. If not observed directly at the LHC, the new physics may reveal itself through deviations of Higgs properties from their Standard Model expectations, or it may become directly accessible only at new, higher-energy accelerator facilities. It is then of primary importance to have a comprehensive review of the available and planned accelerators and their design, physics motivation and expected performance. This book comprises 26 carefully edited articles with well-referenced and up-to-date material written by many of the leading experts. These articles — originated from presentations and dialogues at the second HKUST Institute for Advanced Study Program on High Energy Physics — are organized into three aspects, Theory, Accelerator, and Experiment, focusing on in-depth analyses and technical aspects that are essential for the developments and expectations for the future high energy physics.

Book 60 Years Of Cern Experiments And Discoveries

Download or read book 60 Years Of Cern Experiments And Discoveries written by Herwig Schopper and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a compilation of the most important experimental results achieved during the past 60 years at CERN - from the mid-1950s to the latest discovery of the Higgs particle. Covering the results from the early accelerators at CERN to those most recent at the LHC, the contents provide an excellent review of the achievements of this outstanding laboratory. Not only presented is the impressive scientific progress achieved during the past six decades, but also demonstrated is the special way in which successful international collaboration exists at CERN.

Book The Mass and Width of the W Boson

Download or read book The Mass and Width of the W Boson written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tevatron and LEP2 experiments presently provide the most precise direct determinations of the mass and width of the W boson. The combined results are: M[sub w]= 80.394[+-] 0.042 GeV and[Gamma][sub w]= 2.095[+-] 0.106 GeV. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the Standard Model. In this article the latest results are described and the systematic errors which could limit further significant improvements in the precision of these measurements are reviewed.

Book Precision Measurement of the Mass and Width of the W Boson at CDF

Download or read book Precision Measurement of the Mass and Width of the W Boson at CDF written by S. Malik and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precision measurement of the mass and width of the W boson is presented. The W bosons are produced in proton antiproton collisions occurring at a centre of mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Tevatron accelerator. The data used for the analyses is collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and corresponds to an average integrated luminosity of 350 pb-1 for the W width analysis for the electron and muon channels and an average integrated luminosity of 2350 pb-1 for the W mass analysis. The mass and width of the W boson is extracted by fitting to the transverse mass distribution, with the peak of the distribution being most sensitive to the mass and the tail of the distribution sensitive to the width. The W width measurement in the electron and muon channels is combined to give a final result of 2032 ± 73 MeV. The systematic uncertainty on the W mass from the recoil of the W boson against the initial state gluon radiation is discussed. A systematic study of the recoil in Z \rightarrow e+e- events where one electron is reconstructed in the central calorimeter and the other in the plug calorimeter and its effect on the W mass is presented for the first time in this thesis.
